2013 Provost's Award for Best Paper in Online Education Research 

The Provost's Office would like to announce its annual Provost's Award for Best Paper in Online Education Research.

The competition was established to encourage excellence in online education and new scholarship and research among UMUC faculty. All Stateside and Abroad UMUC faculty members (including Adjuncts) and academic administrators who have taught online or hybrid courses* are invited to submit original, unpublished papers that are of the same high quality as submissions to peer-reviewed journals.

As many as three winners will be recognized with a $500 honorarium and will be featured on the Faculty Development Web page. Recipients will also be invited to the Academic Achievement dinner.  Co-authors on papers are also encouraged, whereby the honorarium would be split among the co-authors.

*To be eligible, adjunct faculty members must have taught for at least two semesters since January 2007.

Submission Details and Requirements

Submissions should focus on online education and may include, but are not limited to:

  • Best instructional practices
  • Administration and policy
  • New technology
  • New approaches to teaching and learning 

Submissions that focus on best practices should clearly demonstrate how the practices were incorporated into the overall course, focus on evidence of student learning and engagement and show how best practices might be applied by fellow faculty members.

Please note the submissions must also

  • Include a scholarly review of literature with a minimum of 10 sources
  • Be predominantly about UMUC data, context, or domain
  • Be between 4,000 and 10,000 words, not including documentation and references
  • Be single-spaced, font size 12, with one-inch margins
  • Follow APA or MLA style
  • Include the author name(s), title(s), and departmental affiliation(s) on page 1 

Research must comply with all policies of UMUC and where appropriate be approved by the Office of Institutional Research and Planning.  If the proposed research will employ human subjects (UMUC students or others), the faculty member will be responsible for adhering to all requirements of UMUC Policy #130.25 ("Conducting Research Involving Human Subjects"), including any needed review by the UMUC Institutional Review Board (IRB).  Faculty should complete the IRB review form and submit it to the IRB for approval.  For questions about clearance from using UMUC data, please contact Denise Nadasen at denise.nadasen@umuc.edu

Submission Deadline

Submissions should be sent to Wendy Williams at wendy.williams-sumpter@umuc.edu by Friday, March 29, 2013. Papers will undergo review by a committee chaired by Jay Liebowitz, Orkand Chair, and authors will likely be asked to make modifications to content and style for publication of the final version on the Faculty Development Web page.

Winners will be announced in mid-April 2013.
