Benefits Overview for Nine-Month Collegiate Employees

University of Maryland University College (UMUC) offers nine-month collegiate employees access to many state of Maryland benefits. The cost of state health care programs varies depending upon the coverage selected and the number of family members covered. Health care and retirement subsidies are added to nine-month collegiate employees’ base salaries and paid biweekly. Here is a brief snapshot of what’s available.

Medical Plans

Nine-month collegiate employees receive a health benefit subsidy of $2,175. This subsidy may be used to enroll in one of the many health plans offered by the state of Maryland or to enroll in a separate, freestanding group insurance plan. Eight state health plan options (with vision benefits included) from which to choose

  • Two preferred provider organization (PPO) plans
  • Three point-of-service (POS) plans
  • Three exclusive provider organization (EPO) plans

Prescription Plan

  • Covers the cost of approved prescription drugs at participating Catalyst Rx pharmacies subject to nominal copayments
  • Allows you to order prescriptions through Walgreens Mail Service

Dental Plans

Two dental plans available from United Concordia

  • Dental preferred provider organization (DPPO) plan
  • Dental health maintenance organization (DHMO) plan

Accidental Death and Dismemberment Insurance

  • Offered through Metropolitan Life Insurance Company
  • No medical exam required
  • Provides coverage for accidents that occur on or off the job

Long-Term Care Insurance

  • Offered through Prudential Insurance Company of America
  • No medical exam required for newly hired employees during their initial 60-day eligibility period
  • Available to all active employees and state retirees and their family members, including spouses, adult children, siblings, and parents and grandparents (in-laws included)

Retirement—Supplemental

Nine-month collegiate employees may participate in any of the supplemental retirement annuity (SRA) plans listed below. The university does not provide subsidies or matching funds.

Plans are available from three vendors

  • Maryland Supplemental Retirement Plans (administered by Nationwide)
    • 457(b) deferred compensation plan
    • 403(b) tax-deferred annuity plan
    • 401(k) savings/investment plan
    • TIAA-CREF and Fidelity Investments
    • 457(b) deferred compensation plan
    • 403(b) tax-deferred annuity plan

Tuition Remission

Nine-month collegiate employees are eligible to take one UMUC course per contract period free of tuition charges. Books and other fees related to the course are the employee’s responsibility.

Direct Deposit

Direct deposit is available to nine-month collegiate employees. Paychecks will automatically be deposited directly into an employee’s checking account once the employee completes a Direct Deposit Authorization form.

State Employees Credit Union (SECU)

SECU membership is available to nine-month collegiate employees, their families, and household members.

  • Ten dollars must be deposited into a share savings account to establish SECU membership and gain access to all SECU products, services, and benefits. This is a lifetime membership as long as a minimum balance of $10 is maintained.
