Maryland Community College Transfer Scholarship

Scholarship Deadline

UMUC is accepting scholarship applications now for the 2009-2010 academic year. Don't wait—scholarships are awarded on a first-come, first-served basis.

These scholarships are available thanks to the tremendous generosity of an anonymous donor, who has made it possible for UMUC to help more students realize their educational goals and dreams. The entire UMUC community extends its sincere appreciation to this new friend and benefactor of the university.

How much can a student receive for full-time or part-time study?

Recipients may be awarded $3,300/year for full-time study or $1,650/year for part-time study.  

Can I use the scholarship for the summer semester?

The Maryland Community College Scholarship is only disbursed for the Fall and Spring semesters. Students who plan to take classes in the Summer semester should plan to budget accordingly. There are no summer disbursements.

When will I be awarded the scholarship? 

Students who submit complete scholarship packets will be awarded immediately. Scholarship awards will post to a student's account 10 days before the start of the last registered class for the fall semester. If you are registered for Term II or mid-fall/spring classes, your award will post 10 days before the start of the class.

Is the scholarship awarded to students that attend any Maryland community college? 

No, you must attend one of the alliance schools that participate in the Maryland Community College Scholarship Program.

Can I be awarded the scholarship with a 2.9 GPA?

No, you must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 from one of the participating community colleges. Click here to view the participating community colleges.

I am not a Maryland resident but I attend a Maryland Community College. Can I be awarded the scholarship?

Yes, but tuition may be calculated at the out-of-state rate.  F1 and J2 visa holders are not eligible.  Non residents will need to complete the FAFSA at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/ with the UMUC school code—011644—to determine eligibility.

Can I receive multiple scholarships from UMUC?

No, you may only accept one scholarship from UMUC. You can receive additional financial aid opportunities from grants, loans and external scholarship sponsors.

Can I renew my scholarship? 

Yes. Full-time recipients may renew their awards for one year and part-time students may renew their awards for three years based on completion of all scholarship guidelines and criteria.

Can I receive the scholarship for my Graduate study? 

No. The scholarship is only awarded to undergraduate students.

What is considered full-time and part-time? 

Full-time students must enroll in at least 12 credits hours each Fall and Spring semesters and earn at least 30 credit hours per academic year.  Part-time students must enroll in at least 6 credit hours each Fall and Spring semesters and earn at least 15 credits hours per academic year. Students will need to take additional credits above the minimum stated credit requirements during the Fall, Winter, Spring or Summer semesters in order to maintain scholarship eligibility.

I would like to change my enrollment status from part-time to full-time or full- time to part-time but my award has been dispersed. Will my scholarship be
affected?

Yes, by changing your enrollment status, you may incur a balance due to the difference in tuition and fees accrued.  For more information, contact Morgan Pearson at mpearson@umuc.edu.

I would like to take classes at another institution while still enrolled at UMUC. Will my scholarship be affected?

Students who wish to take classes at an outside institution must first gain permission from their advisor. Classes taken outside of UMUC may apply to your degree requirements but will not be used as part of the minimum credit requirement for the scholarship.
