Federal Work-Study Program
About the Program
Federal Work-Study (FWS) is a federal financial aid program designed to provide part-time employment to eligible students.
- FWS employment provides opportunities for students to earn money to meet necessary educational expenses while gaining work experience.
- FWS is a need-based program as determined by the FAFSA and is administered through the Financial Aid Office.
The university may offer you aid from the Federal Work-Study Program if you are an undergraduate or graduate student. This program gives you the opportunity to earn money by working part-time during the school year and possibly full-time during the summer months and school breaks.

On and Off Campus Jobs
Jobs are available on and off campus. An FWS job off campus can give you experience working in an area related to your academic major. Community service work will give you the satisfaction of helping others, and will be a value addition to your resume. UMUC’s Financial Aid Office maintains a list of available Federal Work-Study positions.
To learn more about UMUC’s Federal Work-Study Program or to apply for available FWS positions, please contact the FWS Office at 301-985-7705.
Salary and Earnings
The salary for on campus employment is $9.00 per hour and off campus employment is $12.00.
If you accept FWS as part of your aid package, please remember that you cannot earn more than the total eligibility shown on your Financial Aid Notification. The money you earn is not included as student income when you apply for financial aid for the next year. Earnings from the FWS Program are subject to all applicable federal, state and local taxes.
Unlike grants and loans, your FWS eligibility does not defer payments of tuition and fees and other university charges. Instead, you receive biweekly paychecks as you work. You can use your earnings toward day-to-day educational and living expenses, or you can save your earnings made during the fall term toward tuition and fee expenses for the spring term.
