John Beyers, academic director for math and statistics, School of Undergraduate Studies, presented “Learning Mathematics: Highlights and Hurdles,” at Community College of Baltimore County’s Catonsville campus, October 24, 2005. Beyers’ presentation focused on strategies students can use to become more effective learners.

Stephen Cory, faculty member in history, School of Undergraduate Studies, presented “Forgotten Palace? Morocco’s al-Badi’a as a Symbol of Caliphal Splendor” at the Middle East Studies Association meeting November 18-20, 2005, in Washington, D.C.

Andrea Martino, public relations director, evaluated University of Maryland, College Park communication students’ final presentations on December 16, 2005. The Communications 231 course serves as a transition from essay and academic writing to journalism and public relations/communications.

Alice Mitchell, assistant professor/assistant director, School of Undergraduate Studies, served as a faculty member for a national student affairs assessment seminar given at Penn State University June 22-24, 2005, to enable participants to begin to plan assessment programs at their own institutions. Also, Mitchell’s review of the book, Assessment for Learning: Building a Sustainable Commitment Across the Institution (Peggy Maki, 2004, Stylus Press), appeared in the September-October 2005 issue of the Journal of College Student Development. JCSD is the leading research journal in the profession of student affairs. Michell is serving her second term on the JCSD editorial board.

Kathleen Nutter, faculty member in history, School of Undergraduate Studies, presented “Chick Chocolates? The Impact of the Women’s Liberation Movement on the Marketing of Chocolate Bonbons,” during the Mid-Atlantic Popular Culture Association Conference at Rutgers University on November 5, 2005.

Michael Szporer, faculty member in English and communication studies, School of Undergraduate Studies, gave a presentation at Harvard University on December 14, 2005, on his work regarding the Solidarity movement in Poland. The conference at Harvard’s Davis Center for Russian and Eurasian Studies and the Harvard Cold War Studies Institute was held in conjunction with the 25th anniversary of Solidarity. Szporer has written a book on Solidarity, entitled Great August: Twenty One Conversations with Solidarity (Pennsylvania State University Press).
