| Kudos Carol Dell’Amore, director of UMUC’s National Leadership Institute, was appointed a senior fellow of the James MacGregor Burns Academy of Leadership at University of Maryland, College Park. Douglas Dauphinee, who teaches computer science for UMUC–Europe, had an article entitled “Plagiarism Not the Way to Serve with Integrity” published in the October 20, 2002, issue of Stars and Stripes. Cristina Dewey, UMUC’s director of National Military Outreach, was elected to the Council of College and Military Educators executive board at the council’s annual conference in San Antonio, Texas. She will serve as secretary of the 1,000-member organization for 2003–2005. Lucinda Hart-Gonzalez, director of English, humanities, and modern languages in UMUC’s School of Undergraduate Studies, presented “Creating Solutions at Every Level of the Virtual University” at Virtual Educa 2002, the International Conference on Education, Training, and New Technologies, held in Valencia, Spain, in June 2002. Lynne McNamara, UMUC’s director of International Programs, gave a presentation, entitled “Quality Assurance for Electronically Offered Education Programs: An American Perspective,” at the Conference on Research in Distance and Adult Learning in Asia, in Hong Kong, China. Her co-presenter was Glenn Shive, director of the Hong Kong-America Center. More recently, McNamara gave a presentation, entitled “Online Education: Qualifying Quality,” as part of a panel discussion at the Mexican Association of Continuing Education in Xalapa, Mexico. Her paper, entitled “Internationalizing Distance Education: Closing the Gaps of Distance,” has been accepted for the 21st ICDE (International Council for Open Distance and Education) World Conference on Open Learning and Distance Education to be held in Hong Kong, China, in June 2003.
Theodore Stone, UMUC’s assistant provost and director of the Center for the Virtual University, was invited to make a presentation at the Information Technology Partnership Conference, held in Alexandria and Cairo, Egypt, in May 2002. While in Egypt, Stone served as intermediary in having a letter of interest signed by Earl Sullivan, provost of the American University in Cairo. Provost Nicholas H. Allen had signed the letter beforehand on behalf of UMUC. Bradford Wright, who teaches history for UMUC–Europe, recently filmed an interview with the History Channel for a two-hour documentary, entitled “Superheroes,” which deals with the social history of comic books and superheroes. The documentary is scheduled to air in the summer of 2003. Also, Wright’s book Comic Book Nation (Johns Hopkins University Press, 2001) is being reissued in paperback later this year, complete with a new postscript by the author. |
