John Jones, UMUC’s vice president of Department of Defense relations, gave a presentation entitled, “Success for the Military Student,” to the College Board Forum in Chicago, Illinois, on October 30, 2004.

Dee Preston-Dillon, a collegiate faculty member in psychology at UMUC, presented a workshop at the 21st Annual Association for Play Therapy International Conference in Denver, Colorado. The workshop was entitled, “Cultural Dimensions of Sandplay: Ethnic Identity and Cross-Cultural Dynamics.” She also published an hour-long training CD for clinicians, entitled, “Emerson in the Sand: Amplification to Revitalize and Deepen Your Experience of Sandplay.”

Jennifer Ross-Nazzal, who teaches history for UMUC, was recently promoted to the position of historian for the NASA Johnson Space Center.

Kathleen Warner, director and collegiate associate professor of science, and Patricia D. Wolf, collegiate associate professor of information systems management and director of Faculty and Distance Education Services, made a poster presentation entitled, “Online Tutoring to Support Online Classes,” at the EDUCAUSE Conference in Denver, Colorado, October 21, 2004. The presentation highlighted the different ways that students can receive online tutoring in UMUC’s biology and computer classes.

UMUC’s history faculty and students played prominent roles at the annual meeting of the American Historical Association in Seattle, January 6–9, 2005. Sylvia Washington presented “Ball of Confusion: The African American Response to Earthday (1970).” Scott Haine and Bud Burkhard served as commentator and chair, respectively, for a panel on “Degradation and Agency in Alcohol Treatments in the 19th-Century U.S.” Scott Merriman chaired the “Archives and Artifacts Online” panel for the affiliate American Association for History and Computing, and Burkhard chaired the panel on “Accessing and Preserving Digital Records.” Martin Gordon presented “History, Dollars, Declassified Imagery, and the Environment,” at a session sponsored by the Society for History in the Federal Government. Several UMUC history students joined the festivities, including Megan Warner and James and Sophia Glasco. Another student, Rick Eckert, worked for the conference, staffing the table in the employment information and interview area. A local AM radio station, KOMO News 1000, interviewed Eckert on his experience studying history online and broadcast his credentials as a UMUC student all over the Puget Sound region.
