Kudos Michael Beaudoin, a faculty member in UMUC’s Master of Distance Education program, recently received the Charles Wedemeyer Award from the University Continuing Education Association’s Distance Learning Community of Practice for his work on Vol. 8. of the ASF series on distance education, Critical Issues in Distance Education (Oldenburg, 2004). He also contributed a chapter to the recently published book, The Impact of Distance Teaching and Learning on Higher Education in the New Century. Ulrich Bernath, a faculty member in UMUC’s Master of Distance Education program, was re-elected to a three-year term as a member of the steering committee of the European Distance Education Network’s Network of Academics and Professionals. Bernath is also a member of the editorial board of the American Journal of Distance Education. Sam Chaudhri and Les Pang, both of UMUC’s computer science management program, contributed to the book, Management Information Systems: Solving Business Problems with Information Technology, fourth edition, scheduled for publication in 2006. Jim Chen, program director for information technology in UMUC’s Graduate School of Management and Technology, made three recent conference presentations with different colleagues. He presented, “Toward an Ontology of IAS [Information Assurance and Security] Ethics,” at the sixth annual Center for Education and Research in Information Assurance and Security Symposium at Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana, March 23–24, 2005, with Joseph Ekstrom of Brigham Young University, Sam Liles of Purdue University Calumet, and Victor Raskin of Purdue University. At the third annual SecureIT Information Technology and Network Security Conference in San Diego, California, April 19–22, 2005, Chen presented, “Faculty-Curriculum Development: What Works and What Doesn’t,” with Isaac Ghansah, Qing Yuan, Chen-Chi Shing, Melissa Dark, and Mario Garcio. He presented, “Enhancing Information Assurance Education with Remote Access Laboratories,” with UMUC colleagues Don Goff, Mary Hoferek, and Hasan Sayani. Kathleen Edwards, program director for health care administration at UMUC, presented a session entitled, “Negotiation and Conflict Resolution for Public Health Leaders,” at the South East Public Health Leadership Institute on May 4, 2005. She also presented sessions entitled, “Effective Change Management,” and, “Conflict Resolution for Public Health Leaders,” at the Mid Atlantic Health Leadership Institute, May 23–25, 2005. James Gelatt, program director for interdisciplinary studies in management at UMUC, presented a plenary address at the Third National Conference on Association Foundations and Fund Raising, in Washington, D.C., May 23, 2005. Gila Kurtz, a faculty member in UMUC’s Master of Distance Education program, was elected to the EDEN Network of Academics and Professionals. She will present a paper (coauthored with J. Kantor and D. Teeni), entitled, “Learning Financial Accounting at a Graduate Level in a Fully Online Environment,” at EDEN’s 2005 annual conference in Helsinki, Finland. Clarence Mann, associate chair of UMUC’s business and executive programs, presented a paper on managing country risk to a competitive session of the Academy of International Business in Stockholm, Sweden, July 2004. Michael Riley, assistant dean in UMUC’s School of Undergraduate Studies who served as chief financial officer for United Airlines in the mid-1980s, was quoted in an Associated Press story on the airlines’ ongoing efforts to emerge from Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. Hasan Sayani, program director for UMUC’s Master of Software Engineering program, presented a paper on semantic-based modeling at the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS), January 5–7, 2005. He also presented a paper at SecureIT 2005, discussing the Software Engineering Lab. Jessica A. Sheetz-Nguyen, who teaches history for UMUC, received a Fulbright grant to participate in the summer seminar at the American School of Classical Studies in Athens, Greece. The seminar lasts six weeks and explores Greece from antiquity to the present. Theodore Stone, assistant provost and director of UMUC’s Center for the Virtual University, was recently elected to two national leadership positions, one as a national advisory board member with the National University Telecommunications Network and one as commissioner with the University Continuing Education Association. Merrily Stover, a collegiate professor of social sciences and former assistant dean for communication, arts, and humanities at UMUC, recently presented her paper, “Samoan Responses to Margaret Mead,” at the annual meeting of the Association for Social Anthropology in Oceania, February 2005, in Kauai, Hawaii. Her travel was supported, in part, by a faculty development grant from UMUC’s Center for Teaching and Learning. Lucia Worthington, who teaches business and management courses in UMUC’s School of Undergraduate Studies, published a paper entitled, “Innovative Technology-Based Business Strategies Offer More ‘Bang for the Buck’ for Successful International Development,” in the 2005 annual edition of Perspectives, a publication of the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies. |
