UMUC alumna Donna Carol Boisseau ('00), performed the National Anthem for the Wizards home game on March 29 against Golden State. Donna has performed for many UMUC events, including President Heeger's inauguration in September 2000 and the University's Adelphi commencements in 2000 and 2001.

The Washington chapter of the American Jewish Committee presented its 2001 Civic Achievement Award on May 23 to Board of Visitors member John M. Derrick, Jr., chairman and CEO of Pepco, the local power company. John was recognized for his extraordinary community leadership and involvement in a wide range of professional, civic, and cultural organizations. UMUC President Gerald A. Heeger, at John's request, delivered the keynote speech at the dinner.

Scott Haine, adjunct professor of history, wrote The History of France and his study of Paris cafés, The World of the Paris Café, is an academic hit. For more information on the study of Paris cafés, his book is featured in the Literary Corner section of this issue of FYI Online. Haine also participated in the Society for French Historical Studies Annual Conference that was held on the campus of the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.

Rosemary Hartigan, director of the MBA program, co-authored a recent case study, entitled "When Golden Handcuffs Become More Than a Retention Strategy," that was published in Advances in Developing Human Resources, Vol. 3, Number
1, Feb. '01.

Jim Hartsock, professor of business and management, is participating in Leadership Hagerstown this year as part of Class XIV. He will graduate on June 14. Hartsock has been elected by his fellow class members to serve on the Leadership Hagerstown Board of Trustees.

Terry Kelly, assistant director, graduate marketing, graduated from UMUC in May with an MS in Management.

Lynne A. McNamara, director of program development at UMUC - Asia, was asked to "organize" by inviting two other speakers known for online education at a U.S. Embassy- sponsored speaking tour in early March. She was an invited speaker for the AIEA in Tucson in February as well. McNamara will also have an article published in the CASE International Journal.

David Norris, from UMUC-Asia (Korea), recently published an article, entitled "Shared Voices," a discussion of teaching poetry to "reluctant" students, in The New Studies of English Language & Literature.

Richard Peabody, adjunct professor in creative writing-poetry, read poetry and a short short story Feb. 6, in the Adda Tuesday night reading series at the Chi-Cha Lounge in Washington, D.C.

Kathleen Waters Sander, humanities professor and designer of UMUC courses, had the lead article in the Perspective section of The Baltimore Sun, March 4, on her latest research: Mary Elizabeth Garrett, the most prominent woman philanthropist in the 19th century. At a book discussion sponsored by Washington Independent Writers and the DC Center for the Book March 26, Sander was also a featured speaker for her contribution to American Women's Changing Access to Power: Then and Now Authors, celebrating the women behind the presidents.

Richard Schumaker, philosophy and English professor for UMUC - Europe, arranged a presentation on teaching on the Web for a conference in St. Petersburg, Russia.

Dawn Schwartz, program management specialist for undergraduate marketing, graduated from UMUC in May with a BS, Information Systems Management, and certificates in Web Design and Computer Graphics and Design.
