Nearing the Finish

ICC addition
Rapid progress continues on the 100,000-square-foot addition to UMUC’s Inn and Conference Center, scheduled for completion in December 2003. The added space will make the UMUC complex the 12th-largest meeting facility in the national capital area.

Ribbon Cutting at University Centre

ribbon cutting
More than 75 UMUC employees turned out November 7, 2003, to enjoy the sunshine, a potluck lunch, and a ribbon-cutting ceremony—the culmination of an employee initiative, spearheaded by George Ruff, executive administrative assistant in Institutional Advancement, and supported by UMUC President Gerald Heeger, to purchase two picnic tables and form an outdoor “break room” behind UMUC’s University Centre offices on Route 1. The University Centre suite houses the offices of Institutional Advancement, Alumni Relations, Faculty and Distance Education Services, Department of Defense Relations, and Learning Applications Development and Support. Special thanks go to Institutional Advancement, which funded the project; to Valerie Mares, special events coordinator in Alumni Relations, for organizing the celebration; to Bobby Stahl, associate vice president of Operations, for providing the (strictly nonalcoholic) drinks; and to all those who brought food and helped set up beforehand, clean up after, and generally make the whole affair a big success. Shown here cutting the ribbon (left to right): Cynthia Sikorski, director, Alumni Relations; Robb Sapp, director, Learning Applications, Development, and Support; Colleen Grimes, assistant director, Faculty and Distance Education Services; and J. J. Jones, vice president, Department of Defense Relations.

All Dressed Up

All dressed up
Surprising as it might seem, they aren’t on their way to the Royal Ascot; instead, they’re stateside employees of UMUC’s Graduate School who decided to take a different approach to “dress down” Fridays and dressed up instead. (Top row, left to right) Regina Massaquoi, Denise Richards, Toni Holder, and Sawsan Said; (second row, left to right) Pat Musick, Jacqueline Frierson, Mary Murrel, Ellyn McLaughlin; (seated, left to right) Brenda Conley, Yolanda Gayol.
