UMUC–Recognized for Its Achievements
KMI Media and Military Advanced Education (MAE) have named UMUC one of the top ten colleges and universities serving military students for 2007. The top ten institutions were selected based on multiple factors, from number of military students served to availability of financial aid options and scholarships for servicemembers, as well as other military-friendly qualities.
UMUC’s Master of Distance Education (MDE) program recently received EFMD CEL accreditation, the highest international standard of technology-enhanced learning programs in the field of management education. The awarding body carefully examined the effectiveness of the program’s teaching and learning process and regarded UMUC's MDE program as a “best practice case in academia.”
The university has won many awards for its online programs. Most recently, UMUC was recognized with the 2006 Sloan Consortium (Sloan-C) Excellence in Faculty Development for Online Teaching award. In 2004, UMUC received the highest honor given in Web education: the Sloan-C Award for Excellence in Institution-Wide Asynchronous Learning Network Programming. The university also earned Best Distance Education Course, as determined by the Maryland Distance Learning Association.
A Black Issues in Higher Education listing showed that in fiscal year 2001, UMUC ranked third nationwide in graduating African-Americans with graduate degrees in business, according to an analysis of U.S. Department of Education reports. The category includes all UMUC management degrees, not just the MBA.
UMUC recently received two more prestigious honors: the National Security Agency designated UMUC a Center of Academic Excellence in Information Assurance Education for the university's programs in information assurance (internet security) and UMUC's Web site received Forbes magazine's distinction as being "Best of the Web" in distance education.
