Biography
My name is Sarah Reed, and I am an undergraduate here at UMUC. My major is in English, and my minor is in sociology. I am a freelance photographer and aspiring novelist. I work online as a writing advisor for UMUC's Effective Writing Center. I enjoy reading, taking long walks, and having equally as long--if not longer--talks over coffee. I also enjoy taking trip to all of the area's used book and thrift shops. I collect vintage books, and vintage cameras.
I live in Davison, Michigan, with my husband, Chris, who also attends UMUC online and works for the Effective Writing Center. We have two amazing children. When we both graduate and our children are in college, we plan on purchasing an RV and then traveling around the country photographing and writing about our journeys.
Nomination Essay
As a full time, work-at-home parent, who also attends classes online, I know how busy our lives can get. Our lives here at UMUC are unique. We are not just college students. We are parents, employees, managers, friends, spouses – we are adults who must fill many roles, and UMUC helps us reach our educational goals while advancing and maintaining our current positions and relationships. Our time is precious and our education is important, which is why as a STAC representative, I would understand and support each of you as you pursue each opportunity life offers.
For me, attending UMUC online has opened up a word of opportunities including a position at the Effective Writing Center (EWC). Daily, students come through the center seeking our help. I have worked with hundreds of students over the past four years helping each one improve their writing skills. Working at the EWC has given me the wonderful opportunity to get to know my fellow classmates even though none of us have met face-to-face.
I also had the opportunity to work with prospective UMUC students by participating in the UMUC411 program. UMUC411 gives those interested in online education here at UMUC a unique opportunity to test drive an online class. Participating in these online sessions is an honor for me because I am given yet another opportunity to provide support to others.
As a STAC representative, I feel I would be able to represent students effectively because I have worked with hundreds of students at UMUC, and I understand our unique educational experience. Thank you for considering me.
