Frequently Asked Questions

Is UMUC accredited?

The Commission on Higher Education of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, 3624 Market Street, Philadelphia, PA 19104 (216-662-5606) accredits UMUC.

The Commission on Higher Education is an institutional accrediting agency recognized by the US Secretary of Education and the Commission on Recognition of Postsecondary Accreditation.

How long will it take to complete my degree?

All requirements established for the completion of a degree program must be fulfilled within seven consecutive years (5 years for the MBA). This regulation includes courses transferred from other institutions. Graduation requirements for any degree will be those that were in effect in the semester in which the first course within the five- or seven-year time frame was completed.

What is distance education?

Online students enjoy the unparalleled convenience of commuting to class by modem. UMUC has been setting the standard in distance education for more than 25 years. Because UMUC brings its resources to online students-admission, registration, counseling, financial aid, veteran's benefits, textbook ordering and delivery, and library services -- there is no need to go to a campus. Distance education students use state-of-the-art technology to connect to faculty members, coursemates, and advisors. The great advantage of distance education is that it gives students the flexibility to achieve an appropriate balance of work, family, community, and educational commitments.

How does an online course differ from an on-site course?

The Graduate School's online courses maintain the same academic standards as on-site courses. Course content, texts, requirements, assignments, and class participation are compatible for online and on-site courses. The Graduate School offers courses on-line asynchronously via WebTycho. WebTycho is UMUC's interactive, web-based course management system.

I am having difficulty accessing WebTycho. What should I do?

When you first register for a WebTycho course, a WebTycho account is automatically created for you, usually within 24 hours. If you have not received your account information via e-mail within 24 hours of your registration being confirmed, you may use the Log In Wizard to retrieve your user name and password. Your UMUC WebTycho account is permanent for long as you are actively associated with UMUC as an enrolled student or a faculty member. WebTycho support can be contacted 24 hours a day, seven days a week at 1-800-807-4862 or 301-985-7079. Or an e-mail can be sent to webtychosupport@umuc.edu
