Assessment in Writing and English
Information for Students
GSMT has developed the Assessment in Writing and English (AWE) to help you be more successful at UMUC. AWE is a free tool designed to evaluate your current skills in grammar, language conventions, written expression, and reading comprehension. Your participation is voluntary and your AWE results will not impact the grades in any of your degree or certificate classes. We strongly recommend, however, that you complete the assessment.
Once you submit your responses, you will be shown your scores and be given information about and links to available resources at UMUC that will aid you in taking the necessary steps to prepare for success. Begin the assessment.
If you have any questions prior to taking AWE, please feel free to contact GSMT’s Student Success Initiative Taskforce at gradstudentsuccess@umuc.edu.
Frequently Asked Questions
-
How will taking AWE benefit me?
The short, automated online assessment will help you assess your English skills and knowledge of writing concepts. We have found that students with a solid foundation in English and writing tend to do better in their graduate courses than those students who do not have strong skills in those areas. Our goal is for AWE to help you be more successful at UMUC.
-
If I take AWE, when will I receive my results?
Your results and score information will be visible to you within moments of your completing AWE.
-
Will taking AWE affect my grades in my courses?
No. Taking AWE will not impact your grades in any of your graduate degree or certificate courses.
-
Will my professors know my scores?
No. Professors will not be given or have access to your scores.
-
If I don’t do well on AWE, will I still be able to complete my degree or certificate program at UMUC?
Yes. Your scores on AWE will not affect your ability to complete your degree or certificate program; however, we encourage you to avail yourself of all writing resources available.
