Polaris: How Do I Access My Account?

Named computer accounts are created on UMUC's UNIX system called Polaris. These accounts stay active as long as you are a registered UMUC user. Their purpose is to give each user a storage area and UMUC e-mail address.

Step 1

Start a terminal session to the Polaris server either using the PortaPuTTY icon on your computer OR,

for Mac or Linux users: If you are using SSH from the command line on a non-Windows computer, you will enter:
ssh [username]@polaris.umuc.edu Replace [username] with your account name and skip the next step.

Step 2

At the login prompt, type your Polaris account name

Step 3

Enter your Polaris Password. (The cursor will not move as you type)

Step 4

Once you are authenticated, you will see the Polaris > prompt.

Passwords are set to expire for security reasons at various intervals. If you try to access your account with an external application such as ftp and find you are unable to establish a connection, your password may have expired. To find out if your password is expired, log directly into your account as shown above. If your password has expired you'll be prompted to change it. An expired password must be changed before you'll be able to access your account with an external application such as an ftp client.
