Email Assistance: How Do I Set AOL As My Default Email Handler?

The information below is designed to assist you with using your AOL email account as or with your default e-mail handler in order to send/receive mail.

You should be able to set AOL mail as your default email program in your browser. See the details below.

Firefox 3.6 and Newer

Step 1

In the Firefox toolbar, click Tools > Options.

 

Step 2

In the Options dialog box, select the Applications tab.

 

Step 3

In the Content Type column, scroll down until you see mailto.

 

Step 4

When you click mailto, there should be a drop-down menu in the Action column.

 

Step 5

Select AOL from the drop-down menu and click OK.

Internet Explorer 7.0 / 8.0

Step 1

In the Internet Explorer toolbar, click Tools > Internet Options.

 

 

Step 2

In the Internet Options dialog box, select the Programs tab.

 

Step 3

In the E-mail drop-down menu, select AOL.

Step 4

Click Apply and OK.

AOL software is NOT installed on my computer (I am using the free web-based AOL mail account):

AOL will not be recognized as a default mail application in your browser. However, you will be able to use other mail applications (Outlook, Thunderbird, etc.) to send/receive your AOL or AIM mail.
