Java: How do I clear cache on a Windows PC?

Java Plugin / Java Virtual Machine (JVM) / Java Runtime Environment (JRE)

Clearing the Java Plug-in cache forces the browser to load the latest versions of web pages and programs.

Select a link below for the version you have installed on your Windows PC:

Java 1.7
Java 1.6
Java 1.5
Java 1.4

    Clear your Java 1.7 cache:

    Step 1: Click on the Start menu, and then select Control Panel.




    Step 2: In the Control Panel Search enter Java Control Panel. Click on the Java icon to open the Java Control Panel. 





    Step 3: Under the General tab, click the Settings button within the Temporary Internet Files section.




    Step 4: Click the Delete Files button.




    Step 5: In the Delete Temporary Files dialog window, select the Trace and Log Files and Cached Applications and Applets checkbox options. 
    Click OK button to run and close the Delete Temporary Files window.




    Step 6: Select the OK button until all the Java Control Panel windows are closed.

    Clear your Java 1.6 cache:

    Step 1: Click on the Start button in the lower left corner of your screen. Slide your cursor up to the Control Panel option.
    If you are using Windows 2000, click on the Start button, then slide your cursor up to the Settings option to choose Control Panel.




    Step 2: When the Control Panel window opens, double-click on the Java icon.



    Step 3: When the Java Control Panel window opens, it will display the General tab.
    In the Temporary Internet Files section at the bottom of this window, click on the Settings button.




    Step 4: In the new window that opens, click on the Delete Files... button.




    Step 5: A confirmation window will appear. Make sure all the checkboxes are checked, and then click OK.
    Then, click OK at the bottom of the
    Temporary Files Settings and Java Control Panel
    windows to close them.
     


    Clear your Java 1.5 cache

    Step 1: Click on the Start button in the lower left corner of your screen. Slide your cursor up to the Control Panel option.
    Note: If you are using Windows 2000, click on the Start button, then slide your cursor up to the Settings option to choose Control Panel.




    Step 2: When the Control Panel window opens, double-click on the Java icon.



    Step 3: When the Java Control Panel window opens, it will display the General tab.
    Click on the Delete Files... button at the bottom of this window.




    Step 4: Click OK in the popup confirmation window. Then, click OK at the bottom of the Java Control Panel window to close it.


    Clear your Java 1.4 cache

    Step 1: Click on the Start button in the lower left corner of your screen. Slide your cursor up to the Control Panel option. 

    Note: If you are using Windows 2000, click on the Start button, then slide your cursor up to the Settings option to choose Control Panel
     
    Step 2: When the Control Panel window opens, double-click on the Java Plug-in icon.
     
    Step 3: Once in the Java Plug-in Control Panel window, click on the Cache tab.

    Step 4: Click on the Clear button in the right-hand side of the window. Click Yes in the popup confirmation window.
     
    Step 5: Close the Control Panel window.
