Polaris: How Do I Connect to University of Maryland University College UNIX Server Using Macintosh or Linux?

Follow the steps below to connect to Polaris UNIX servers using the built in terminal client for Macintosh or Linux:
 

Step 1

Open a terminal:

 

  • On a Mac, click Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > Terminal.
  • Using Linux, click Applications > Accessories > Terminal.
Step 2

After opening a terminal window as described above, connect using the following syntax:

$ ssh [username]@polaris.umuc.edu

Replace [username] with your account userid. For example, if assigned the jsmith9 userid, then you would type:

$ ssh jsmith9@polaris.umuc.edu

Step 3

Enter your Polaris account password when prompted.

Step 4

If prompted for Terminal Type? [vt100], press Enter to accept the default vt100 type.

Step 5

Upon logging into your account for the first time, you will be prompted to accept a security certificate. Please accept it by typing the word accept

You will not be able to access your account until the security policy is accepted.
