LEO: How Do I - Automatically Create Restricted Discussion Topics for All Groups in a Section

If your course has multiple sections you can offer separate but identical discussion topics for each section.

Step 1

Click the Discussions button in the navigation menu to be taken to the Discussions List.

Step 2

Create a new forum by clicking New and then selecting New Forum from the drop-down list. This forum is for the first course section.

Step 3

Enter a Title and Description.

Under Options, select Allow anonymous messages, Messages must be approved before being displayed, or Users must start a thread before they can read and reply to other threads in each topic.

Step 4

Under Availability, set the Visibility of the Forum. Select Forum is always visibleHide this forum or Forum is visible for a specific date range.

NOTE: If you select Forum is always visible for a specific date range, you have to set Start and End dates and times. You will also have the ability to display it on the calendar.

Step 5

Set Locking Options by selecting Unlock forum, Lock forum, or Unlock from a specific date range.

Step 6

Click Save and Close, Save and Add Topic, or Save.

Step 7

Go back to the Discussions List page, click on the More Actions context Menu, and select Copy.

Step 8

Click on Copy a Forum.

Step 9

Select the forum you created from the Forum to Copy drop-down list, add a New Forum Title if you want, and then click Copy.

Note: Select the box next to Copy Topics and Copy pinned messages, if you want to copy those too.

Step 10

Go to the Group and Section Restrictions tab.

Choose the Group or Section Category you want to restrict by clicking on the context button and choosing from your list of groups or sections from the drop down menu.

Choose the Forum you want to restrict by clicking on the context button and choosing from your list of forums from the drop down menu. You can choose All Forums if you want to restrict all of your course forums.

Step 11

Restrict each topic or forum to one of the sections in your course by checking boxes in the row of the topic or forum you want to restrict.

If restricting topic or forums individually, make sure to click Save after each is complete.

The page will not change; you will just need to select the next topic and forumyou will like to restrict.
