Mobile Devices: How Do I - Update OS on my iDevice

Your device downloads updates over your Wi-Fi connection (if available in iOS 5 and later) or mobile network.

If your device notifies you about an update, follow the instructions to download and install it.

To manually check for updates:

Step 1

Select Settings from the Home Screen. Tap General, and then tap on Software Update.

iOS will automatically check for available updates. Available updates download automatically if your device is connected to Wi-Fi and a power source.

Step 2

If an update is available* you can tap Download to download the update.

Step 3

For iPads you may have to tap Details to gain access to the install screen.

After the download is complete tap Install to update your iOS.

If you leave the update to download in the background, once the download has finished you will receive a notification saying an update is available for your device.

Tapping Details will take back to Software Update. Tap Install Now to install the iOS update.

If you decide to leave the installation for later Settings will display notification badge until the update has been installed.

Step 4

When prompted, tap Agree to the terms and conditions.

Step 5

Once software is updated, tap Continue. This will restart your device, and then just follow the instructions on your device screen.

It is recommended that you download updates when you have a Wi-Fi connection. Remember, these updates can be quite large (25MB or more) and may not be available in all countries.

* Some iOS updates may not available as over-the-air updates. VPN or proxy connections may prevent your device from contacting the iOS update servers.
