Direct PLUS Loans - Graduate: How do I apply for a Federal Direct Grad PLUS Loan

The first step in applying for a Federal Direct Grad PLUS Loan is completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

After completing the FAFSA, you'll need to go to, then select the option titled "Apply for a PLUS Loan." After you've been approved for the loan, information associated with the loan is sent to UMUC for certification.

If the initial credit check is denied, the borrower may opt to use an endorser or appeal the decision. If the credit check is approved after using an endorser or after a successful appeal, the borrower will be required to complete PLUS counseling.
Once the loan originates, the system will automatically assign this requirement and complete it once the counseling is received.  UMUC can't disburse a loan until this requirement is fulfilled.

Note: Direct PLUS Loans (Parents and Graduates) disbursed on or after October 1, 2015 will have an origination fee of 4.272%
