UMUC is experiencing and planning for significant growth

  • The number of students enrolled in UMUC stateside programs has grown by 50% in the last five years – from 18,276 in fall 2000 to 27,429 in fall 2005.
  • UMUC is the second largest university in Maryland, and will soon be the largest. The Board of Regents projects that UMUC's enrollments will grow by 101% by 2015.

UMUC is a world leader in online education

  • In Fiscal Year (FY) 2005, UMUC had 144,000 online course enrollments - probably the largest number of online enrollments in a public University.
  • In 2005, UMUC’s Master of Business Administration (MBA) program won the prestigious 2005 Sloan Award for Most Outstanding Online Teaching and Learning Program.
  • In 2004, UMUC garnered the 2004 Prize of Excellence from the International Council for Open and Distance Education (ICDE) for "the highest possible excellence in the fields of open, distance, virtual, and flexible learning."
  • In 2003, the Maryland Distance Learning Association (MDLA) named UMUC’s Better Opportunities Through Online Education program as the 2002-03 Best Distance Program.
  • In 2003, UMUC’s Master of Distance Education program won the Sloan Award for Most Outstanding Online Teaching and Learning Program of 2003.
  • In 2003, UMUC received the University Continuing Education Association Program of Excellence award for its Master of Distance Education program, offered in partnership with Carl von Ossietzky University, Oldenburg, Germany.

UMUC is a Maryland institution addressing Maryland’s needs

  • In fall 2005, 77% of the students enrolled through stateside programs were Maryland residents.
  • Currently, UMUC offers on-site, face-to-face instruction at 20 sites throughout Maryland.

UMUC is a global institution

  • In fall 2006, UMUC’s overseas divisions offered on-site classes in more than 20 countries throughout the world, enrolling over 42,000 active duty military students in undergraduate and graduate programs.

UMUC provides access to higher education for minority students

  • In fall 2005, 32% of UMUC’s stateside students were African-Americans; minority students comprised 44% of the total enrollment – UMUC currently enrolls more African American students than any other public university in Maryland, including Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Our overseas enrollments reflect similar percentages.
  • In FY 2005, 31% of UMUC’s online students were African-American; minority students made up 42%.

UMUC provides higher education opportunities to working adults

  • Four out of five undergraduate students enrolled in UMUC’s stateside programs are also working full time.
  • In fall 2005, the median age for students enrolled in UMUC’s stateside undergraduate programs was 32 years old.

UMUC is the senior academic institution delivering higher education to our military

  • In fall 2006, UMUC enrolled over 42,000 active duty military through its overseas programs under contract with the U.S. Department of Defense.
  • In FY 2005 UMUC enrolled over 8,800 active-duty military students through its stateside online and onsite programs - an increase of 12% over the previous year.
