Library Database Discontinuations

Given the continuing tight economic situation, the UMUC Library must reduce expenses while ensuring adequate quality and coverage for the UMUC curriculum.

Four library databases will need to be discontinued for FY15. The library has obtained input from the Deans of the Undergraduate and Graduate Schools, Assistant Deans, and Chairs and Academic/Program Directors from the affected program areas. The savings provided by this reduction will allow the Library continue to provide the core services required by UMUC students and faculty.

To be discontinued as of July 1, 2014:

  • PROMT
  • Philosopher’s Index
  • Oxford Art Online
  • Ageline

With input from the schools, the Library used the following criteria to assess subscription library database resources:

  • The number of times the resource was accessed in the previous fiscal year
  • Overall cost of the resource and its per-use cost
  • Whether similar content was available in another resource or on the Web
  • How instrumental a resource is in supporting the UMUC curriculum
  • Whether the resource provided access to full text within the databases
  • Collection comparisons and benchmarking against UMUC peer institutions
