E-Books on the Web
In addition to the resources listed on the E-books
page, you can also find other e-books on the web. These e-books are
usually classic texts from the seventeenth to the nineteenth centuries,
i.e. books that are no longer subject to copyright restrictions (currently
the life of the author plus 70 years). Here are a few examples of Web
sites providing e-books:
- Project Gutenberg
This site provides the text of older works of literature primarily in a simple
text format that most computers can display.
- Bartleby.com
This site offers a collection of reference and nonfiction works as well as
literature.
- Electronic Text
Center at the University of Virginia Library
This site offers 1,800 e-books that
can be browsed by subject. Note: you may not be able to access all the e-books
listed. Access to their entire collection is restricted to University of
Virginia affiliates due to legal restrictions.
- General Note
Some publishers and vendors sell e-books directly to
consumers. Currently, there are multiple e-book formats to download
and several e-book readers to display the text of an e-book. Before
purchasing an e-book from a commercial source, it is important to check
if the e-book is compatible with your computer system.
