Military Installations with Restricted Access
The problem:
Some military installations have tight network restrictions which do not allow access to proxy servers, such as the one UMUC employs to give remote users access to library resources.
Is my access restricted?
Please try the following:
- First, check your browser. Run the Browser Quick Check and verify that your browser has cookies, Javascript and SSL enabled. (You will need to click on a button to verify that SSL is enabled.)
- Then try our proxy server. Click this TEST LOGIN link. Do you get a "Remote Access" login screen? Can you log in? Do you then get taken to a page which says "Research Databases"?
- Still unable to get in? If the process fails, you may have restricted access. Check with the installation's network administrator.
My access is restricted. What are my other options?
- Try free search services. Sometimes services, such as the following, will link to free versions of articles.
- Google Scholar
- Scirus for scientific articles
- FindArticles.com for business articles
- Let us know what article you need; we may be able to e-mail it to you. If you find some articles you need, using the above services, and there are not free versions of them available, we may be able to find them in our library databases and e-mail them to you. Please let us know if you find some specific articles you need.
- Are there any less restricted areas around? Depending on the location, sometimes military personnel can find a computer or a connection that is off-base and not under the same restrictions. Also, at some installations, some areas of the base – library or recreation areas - may not be as tightly locked down.
- Does your installation have a library? If so, check with the base librarian to see what kinds of resources s/he may know about.
- Ask the network staff for an exception. In some installations, there may be a form that you could fill out to request that network access to the UMUC proxy server (ezproxy.umuc.edu) be allowed, and an exception may be granted. You would need to talk to the network staff.
