From Kim Kelley
Assistant Vice President of Information and Library Services (ILS)

Welcome to the first edition of the UMUC Information and Library Services Newsletter. This newsletter is designed to keep you up-to-date with new services, sites of interest on the Internet, developments at the Shady Grove Library/Media Center, and special services for faculty.

It is an exciting time in Information and Library Services. The demand for our services has never been greater and the potential services we can provide have never been as plentiful. We are constantly seeking to make our services better, more robust, and available whenever and wherever you may need them.  In addition, we are exploring synchronous, Web-based reference, and trying to implement 24/7 reference service. As we develop these and other new services, we will keep you up-to-date and informed on UMUC’s emerging virtual library. We welcome your feedback, suggestions, complaints, and compliments.

I hope you will find this newsletter helpful and informative. Further, I hope you will let us know what topics you think we need to cover in subsequent issues.

Online Databases

  • What's New!

Information and Library Services (ILS) has added 19 new databases to our collection of electronic resources. Click here (http://www.umuc.edu/library/newsletters/newdatabases.html) to find out more about them.  Several of those databases are being made available to the UMUC community through the new statewide initiative, Maryland Digital Library (MDL) (http://md-diglib.org/). You can access the MDL and other new databases through the MdUSA gateway.

Not able to access a MdUSA database? To find out more about the status of a particular database in MdUSA, go to the Database Status (http://polaris.umuc.edu/library/libweb/database/dbstatus.html) page. If you do not find information about the database there, contact ILS (https://www.umuc.edu/library/question.html).

For Your Information...

For UMUC Faculty:

The Center for Teaching, Learning and Assessment provides a number of faculty development workshops which focus on finding information and using it fairly. This fall, workshops have been offered on UMUC subscription databases; "free" search engines; "fair use, faculty ownership and the Digital Millennium Copyright Act"; as well as helping students to avoid plagiariam. Some of the workshops can be taken online, providing a more convenient method to learn.Watch the link at faculty development workshops (http://www.umuc.edu/distance/odell/ctla/workshops.html) and register for spring workshops when available.

For UMUC Students:

The Research Skills Tutorial (http://www.umuc.edu/library/tutor/intro.html) identifies information resources available to students and provides tips on how to conduct research more effectively. Take a look!

Faculty Corner

Reserve readings can enhance your class and many readings can be made available electronically! Whether you assign journal articles, book chapters, or lecture notes, students only need to click to access the materials immediately through WebTycho.

Once you decide which materials you wish to place on electronic reserve, Electronic Reserves on Web Tycho (http://www.umuc.edu/library/ereserve/resfaq.html) provides details on procedures and copyright issues. ILS will process your request and post the reserve reading (or directions on how to reach the full text article through MdUSA), notifying you as soon as the material is ready for viewing.

In addition, print or audiovisual reserves may be placed at McKeldin Library on the College Park campus, and at the Shady Grove Library/Media Center. Call us at 301-985-7209 or send us e-mail at library@info.umuc.edu for more information.
