From
Kim Kelley
Associate Provost,
Information and Library Services
As we move ahead in the new year, we remain committed to improving
our services and making them available to you whenever and wherever
you need them. With this in mind, we have added new staff
and services to facilitate your access to the information or assistance
you are seeking.
Access to New Library Databases and E-journals
You may now access and use new subscription databases as soon as
ILS gets them and before they are mounted in MdUSA. Look for the
link to them next to the MdUSA logo on the MdUSA
login page. You currently may access PsycARTICLES,
which includes full text articles from APA journals and selected
Educational Publishing Foundation journals,
and Emerald, which is a full text database of articles in
different areas of management, using this new access method.
Please try it and let us know how it works for you. We are
excited to provide quicker access to our resources than ever before!
You may also access full issues of the following electronic journals:
- Emergence: A Journal of Complexity Issues in Organizations
and Management Information Systems
- Interfaces, which includes articles on
communication and practice in operations research and management
services
- Management Science
- Open Learning: The Journal of Open and Distance Learning
- Organization Science
Look for the link
to them in the Electronic databases, e-books, and e-journals section
on the ILS Web page.
Are there electronic journals you are aware of that you would like
us to add to our collection? If so, please let me know
at kkelley@umuc.edu.
ILS Web Page Focus Group
Information and Library Services is in the process of creating
a new look for our home page. We are looking for volunteers for
a focus group to test various formats in March or April. If you
are interested, please contact us at library@umuc.edu.

Online Databases
What's New!
These featured databases are new this Spring:
E-Psyche covers over 4,000 journals, newsletters, preprints, dissertations,
web sites, technical reports, and conference proceedings for professionals,
students, and the general public in psychology and related behavioral
disciplines. Currently there are links to
full text articles in 10 journals, and we are building our collection
to provide links to more full text articles in the future.
- IRIS (Illinois Researcher Information Service)
IRIS is a valuable resource for fund-raising efforts. The IRIS Database
allows you to search 8,000 active federal and private funding opportunities
in the sciences, social sciences, arts, and humanities. The IRIS
Alert Service lets you set up your own search profile and receive
notification of new funding opportunities on the topic you select.

New ILS hours at Adelphi!
To improve our service to you, ILS is expanding its hours in SFSC
2255 on the Adelphi campus. Beginning with the spring semester,
ILS will have extended hours Monday through
Thursday until 7 p.m. for consultations and circulation and will
continue to be open Friday, 8:30 to 5. The UMUC Office
in McKeldin Library, College Park, Md., will continue to be staffed
Monday-Thursday, 5 p.m.-10 p.m., Saturday, 10 p.m.-5 p.m., and will
have extended hours Sunday, noon to 6 p.m.
Enhanced Document Delivery Services
Beginning spring semester 2002, UMUC undergraduate students can
request on interlibrary loan 20 articles or books per semester or
8 week term. Previously, the limit was 10 articles or books. The
20 articles or books will be in addition to requests for University
System of Maryland book titles that can be requested within the
continental United States using the hold feature in VICTORWeb. Interlibrary
loans are unlimited for UMUC graduate students and faculty. To request
an interlibrary loan, use the forms within the MdUSA database or
on the ILS Web
page.
In addition to offering journal article delivery to the desktop,
ILS now also provides book chapter electronic delivery. If you are
not certain which chapter you need, on a case-by-case basis ILS
will provide the table of contents of the book so that you can review
and select specific chapters (no more than 20% of the book content).
The chapters can then be delivered via the Web in PDF format or
by mail or fax (continental U.S. only) if you prefer.
Virtual Library Classroom
Lost in the library? The Peck Virtual Library Classroom (VLC) is
a new service available to help students, staff and faculty use

E-Reserves
Take advantage of the ILS e-reserves service! If you want materials
placed in the Reserved Readings section of your WebTycho and Web-enhanced
classes, ILS staff can make the readings available in electronic
format. Please submit
requests as soon as possible, preferably before your class starts.
We also obtain copyright clearance so you can use these materials
in future semesters. In addition, we will provide detailed instructions
to your students that will allow them to access readings available
full text in our library databases.
The Library's e-reserves service team is composed of Yu-Hsiu Wang,
Electronic Services Librarian and Ann Meade, Library Technician.
Feel free to submit requests or visit the Electronic Reserves FAQ
for more information. You can also telephone us at (301) 985-7209
or 800-888-UMUC x7209 or send e-mail to ereserves@umuc.edu.
The staff looks forward to working with you this spring and beyond.
