From Kim Kelley
Associate Provost, Information and Library Services

Welcome to 2004 and a new semester that we hope will prove successful for you in your academic endeavors. To help you find answers to all your research questions, Information and Library Services (ILS) continues to create and implement ways to make our online resources and services more accessible to you and easier to use.

New Look for the Library Databases and E-Journals Page

The Library and E-Journals page from which you access UMUC's subscription databases has a new look. We have moved many of the "help" links (how to search the databases, find e-books, use "find it" [formerly SFX], and get technical help) to the left-hand frame to make it easier for you to get assistance. If you use the Resources by Topic links to select the database you want to search, you will notice significant changes. Many more topics will be listed and categorized. If you click on a link to one of these topics, you will find an extensive guide with live links to the library databases and e-books in netLibrary as well as a list of Web sites that may be useful for research on that topic. You will also find a list of reference print books on that subject. If you are near a library, you may want to consult one of these books in your research.

These topic guides can also be accessed under Subject Guides on the Information and Library Service (ILS) home page. The most recent guides cover energy, terrorism, and information assurance.

24-Hour Chat and E-Mail Reference Are a Success!

We'd also like to remind you that ILS has been offering chat and e-mail reference service 24 hours a day since September 2003. Click on Ask a Question on the ILS Web page to try out one of these expanded services. In most cases when you use the online chat service, you will be able to view Web pages with a librarian who will guide you through a search on your topic. Reaction to this new chat service has been enthusiastic and positive. On the very first day after a librarian showed a student how to use the database WorldCat, the student commented, "Thanks. This is a very helpful service." A student who was having difficulty finding a legal case said, "This is great…it absolutely does [help me]. I appreciate it." Another student whom a librarian helped navigate through the databases said, "Wow thank you this is terrific- I never would have gotten here on my own--thank you."

In This Issue

Please read the sections below to find out about our new databases, e-journals, and e-books, "hot" management Web sites, the online workshops we'll be offering this spring in the Peck Virtual Library Classroom to help you become better researchers, the tutorials we've created to help you navigate the research process successfully, and hints about developing effective keywords to make it easier to search in the library databases. There will also be an e-book workshop for faculty in the Adelphi area and a list of new acquisitions on the topics of distance education, adult learning, and plagiarism.

Online Databases

New Databases

ILS announces six new databases that will significantly increase your access to research in management, communications, the humanities, education, and psychology:

  • EIU (Economist Intelligence Unit) Executive Briefing
A significant new database for international management and marketing, EIU Executive Briefing provides industry forecasts for 60 countries with five-year, country-by-country outlooks for eight key industries and analysis of critical issues, such as leadership, performance, innovation, and strategy, faced by global executives.

  • Communications and Mass Media Complete
With citation coverage of several hundred resources and full text coverage of 200 titles, Communications and Mass Media Complete is a valuable new database for quality research in areas related to communications and mass media. Coverage includes journals, major journalism reviews, and recent encyclopedias and handbooks in the communications field.
  • American Humanities Index
Citation information for articles, reviews, essays, and creative works, such as poems, fiction, paintings, and photographs for 1,000 literary, scholarly, and creative journals not indexed in other humanities databases. Links to full text articles in other UMUC databases through "find it."
  • Professional Development Collection
This comprehensive collection of educational journals, containing more than 500 full text journals and more than 800 citations and abstracts, is a significant research resource for educational professionals. Links to full text articles in other UMUC databases are provided through "find it."
  • Teacher Reference Center
Citations and abstracts from more than 200 professional teacher and administrator journals with links to full text articles in other UMUC databases through "find it."

  • Psychology and Behavioral Sciences Collection
With more than 550 full text articles from 500 peer-reviewed journals, this database covers emotional and behavioral characteristics, psychiatry & psychology, mental processes, anthropology, and observational and experimental methods. Most of the full text publications are also indexed in PsycINFO.

New E-Journal Collection:
Scholarly Web Journals Now Available through "Find It"

ILS introduces the Directory of Open Access Journals, available through our "find it" service. This collection contains free, full text, quality-controlled, scholarly e-journals in a variety of topics from the arts, business, education, humanities, sciences, and social sciences. You can search these journals from the Directory of Open Access Journals Web site, or you can access the articles in the collection using the find it link when you search in the library's databases.

New E-Book Collection

In addition to the 3,000 e-books in netLibrary, UMUC faculty, students, and staff now have browsing access to more than 10,000 online books in the ebrary collection in the Books in Print with Reviews database. The collection covers a wide range of subjects. You can view the books online at no cost for up to two hours without timing out. If you want to print or copy pages of the books, there is a slight charge. Click for instructions on how to access this e-book collection.

Online Student Workshops

This semester librarians will offer two interactive online student workshops in the Peck Virtual Library Classroom, VLIB 101:

  • Business Research 101: Searching ABI/Inform
Learn strategies for getting results more relevant to your topic in this widely-used, multidisciplinary business database.

  • Using the Library Databases Effectively and Efficiently
Learn how to develop good keywords and search statements to improve your search results and how to search multiple databases at one time.

Send an e-mail if you're interested in one of the workshops. We'll pre-register you and notify you by e-mail once the date and time have been established. Since space is limited, you 'll have a better chance to reserve a place in the class.

For information about VLIB 101, which is a free online resource in WebTycho, to help you master library skills and increase your information literacy, see The Peck Virtual Library Classroom.

New and Updated Tutorials

Information and Library Services has developed two new tutorials and updated one to help you with various aspects of your research:

  • Legal Resources Tutorial
This tutorial familiarizes students with basic legal resources for use in a broad range of academic disciplines and is designed to help non-legal studies students get started with legal research.
  • MLA Citation Style Simplified
Learn when to cite, how to cite within a text, how to find bibliographic information in different materials, and how create a works-cited page. Do the exercises to test your mastery of this citation style that is widely used in the study of literature and the humanities.

  • Citation Explained
The HTML version of this popular APA citation tutorial has been updated to include a printer friendly format.

Click on the Tutorials link under General Resources on the Information and Library Services home page to access the tutorials.

Good Keywords and Boolean Operators: Necessary Ingredients for Successful Database Searches

Your professor has required you to use the library databases for your research because the materials in those databases are much more authoritative and reliable than what you find using Google, Yahoo, or any other Web search engine. However, you can't seem to find any articles related to your topic. Good keywords and Boolean operators will help you conduct a successful search. Find out more about how to develop search strategies to find articles relevant to your topic.

Read a Good E-Book This Year?

The ILS e-book collection is growing and has now reached almost 3,000 books with more books on order this year. The collection includes books in just about every discipline UMUC offers and can be an excellent resource for both you and your students. To discover how to make the most effective use of these online books, plan to attend the ILS faculty face-to-face workshop "Read a Good E-Book This Year?" in Room 2255 of the Faculty and Student Services Building in Adelphi this spring. Topics covered will include how to search effectively for e-books, create an account, and browse or borrow e-books. Send an e-mail to ILS if you are interested in attending. We will notify you by e-mail of the exact date and time for the workshop. ILS has plans to offer the workshop online sometime later this year, perhaps in the fall.

New Acquisitions

View a list of some of our recent acquisitions in distance education, adult learning, and plagiarism.  If you're in Adelphi, come in to ILS at SFSC 2255 and browse through our collection. If you'd like to borrow any of the books, you can request them in the library catalog for pickup at one of the libraries of the University System of Maryland and Affiliated Institutions, if you live in Maryland, or for delivery by mail if you live outside Maryland within the continental United States.
