Associate Provost,
Information and Library Services
The library is growing! We have expanded into Room 2255, next to
our current location in Rm 2271, in the Student and Faculty Services
Center. The additional space will allow us to expand our print collection,
provide space for quiet study, workstations for you to use the library's
online databases, and reference staff available to provide assistance.
Coming Fall 2001
There are major new curriculum changes affecting all undergraduate
students. A required course in information literacy and research
methods, LIBS 150, will satisfy the new General Education requirement
for Interdisciplinary or Emerging Issues. LIBS 150 will be piloted
this fall. For more information about the new requirements, visit
http://www.umuc.edu/prog/ugp/mjr_index.html.

Intellectual Property Matters!
ILS has a joint initiative with UMUC's Office of Distance Education
and Lifelong Learning (ODELL) in the area of intellectual property,
the Center for Intellectual Property (CIP). Look for the CIP's online
workshop series Intellectual Property in Academia. The series
includes two workshops:
- Faculty Ownership of Online Course Materials, August 6-22
- Detecting and Preventing Plagiarism, October 1-19
Each workshop will be led by a nationally renowned scholar in the
field and offered to a national audience. Special discounts are
offered to the UMUC community, as well as a discount for signing
up for both workshops. 2.0 CEUs will be awarded for successful completion
of each workshop in the series.
Details will be available through the CIP's web page at http://www.umuc.edu/distance/odell/cip,
as well as through e-mail notices. For further information, send
an e-mail to CIP-ODELL@umuc.edu.
Library Instruction for Graduate Classes
Would you like an introduction to specific library resources relevant
to your classes? Would you like to see improvement in your students'
research skills? Would you like to have Web-based materials on library
resources and services customized for your classes? Consider including
library instruction in your classroom.
Although all graduate students take the required library skills
course UCSP610, you may find it helpful to reinforce those skills
with additional library instruction. ILS librarians are available
to visit your face-to-face or WebTycho class to:
- teach basic or advanced research skills
- give instruction on searching specific databases
- teach research strategies to support class assignments
- provide print or Web-based handouts
To request
an instruction session for your class, fill out the web-based Faculty
Request for Library Instruction form or contact the library
for more information.
Shady
Grove Library/Media Center
What's new at Shady Grove:
July 2001 will bring changes to the administration of the Shady
Grove Library/Media Center. University of Maryland University College
will no longer directly administer the Library/Media Center, and
the University of Maryland, College Park will assume responsibility
for its operation. Information and Library Services at UMUC remains
committed to ensuring that UMUC faculty and students at Shady Grove
receive the best possible service. We intend to work closely with
UMCP to ensure the services you expect and need are available.
