Using the Library Catalog
Get a Book:
Requesting an Item

To request an eligible item, you must first click on the Availability link from the full view of a record.

Availability link

Once you click on Availability, you will see the option to request the item.

Request button

When you click on the request button you will be prompted to sign in with your UMUC barcode and last name. If you are a currently registered stateside student and receive an error message, please contact library@umuc.edu. The request feature is not available currently to overseas students and faculty.

Sign in screen

To proceed with your request for an item, you must select a pickup location.

  • As a UMUC patron the default pickup location is UMUC Adelphi, the offices of UMUC Information and Library Services in Adelphi, Maryland.
  • Select other USMAI delivery options, including UMUC Dorsey Station and UMUC Waldorf Center, from the list of available options.
  • Choose UMUC Distance Education for home delivery if you live outside of Maryland but in the continental U.S. To learn more about book delivery options, see Get It Delivered: Books from the Library Catalog.
  • Students outside the continental United States may request book chapters for electronic delivery or check the library database Worldcat for local library ownership.

    Pickup locations

Please note: All libraries may not appear as delivery options for some items. For example, you cannot request delivery of any College Park libraries' materials to another library on the College Park campus, but you could select UMCP Shady Grove or the UMUC Staff Library as a pickup location.

Once you have selected your delivery location, you will then see a confirmation of your request.

Confirmation of request

You will be notified by e-mail when the requested item is available for pick-up or delivery (for the Distance Education Book Delivery service).

This concludes the section of the tutorial on requesting items in the catalog. In the next section, we discuss how to find and get electronic books (e-books).
