Using the Library Catalog
Other Searches:
Limiting to Journals

From the main menu bar of the catalog, you can select the option to search for the journals owned by the USMAI libraries. This type of search is especially useful if you plan to visit a USMAI library and would like to check where the journals are located in the library. A Journals search is also a way to help you identify the available journals relevant to your subject, which you can then try to locate in the library databases using Journal Finder.

Catalog menu bar - link to journals

Journals are included in the basic search. However, the Journals option allows you to limit your search solely to journals, newspapers, and magazines owned by the libraries.

Some things to remember when searching Journals:

  • This option searches for records of journal titles owned by a library, not the content of the journals themselves.
  • While some titles may include links to electronic versions of the journals, it is not always possible to access these titles remotely through the catalog. For electronic access to online journal articles, it is best to search the UMUC Library Databases and E-Journals from the ILS Web site (http://www.umuc.edu/library).

When searching for a journal in catalogUSMAI, begin with the full title of the journal you are looking for (e.g. Journal of Adolescence). If you are unsure of the exact title of the journal, select the word/s in title search option.

Additional search options

For example, if you wanted to see what type of journals are available relating to psychology, select the word/s in subject search option. If you wanted to check which journals affiliated in some way with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), you can search for MIT using the word/s in organization name as shown in the example below.

Be careful when switching to a Journals search that you note where you are in the catalog when you perform a new search:

You are here: Journals

If you want to continue searching for books and other types of materials in the catalog, you need to make sure you that are back in the main catalog:

You are here: Catalog - USMAI (all campuses)

You can choose which USMAI catalog to search by selecting the option to choose another catalog from the main search menu, then select the USMAI catalog to return to searching all of the catalogs, not journals only.
