Introduction
There are an ever-increasing number of resources available to foster academic integrity
and detect plagiarized student work. This guide provides an overview of some detection
services, software, and tools currently available and provides information to assist in
evaluating plagiarism detection options that best meet your needs.
For the purposes of this guide, a "detection tool" is defined as software or a web
service made available to educators and students to assist in identifying writing that is
suspected to have been written by someone other than the student submitting the work for
assessment. Some of these tools simply search for suspect text within a controlled
database of collected student papers in a local environment, while other tools search
content available on the World Wide Web, such as HTML, newsgroups, paper mills, and the
like.
