Read below to learn more about the requirements for:


  • Be prepared for your meeting with the mentor, with a completed and updated Professional Action Plan (PAP) form and a list of questions or discussion points. The PAP form will be provided upon acceptance to the program.
  • Respect the mentor’s time and focus on the professional goals in the discussion.
  • Be responsive to the mentor’s suggestions and listen carefully.
  • Don’t ask mentors for jobs; they are here to advise you on your career goals.
  • Maintain professionalism at all times and don’t send e-mails with degree program-related questions to the mentor.
  • If you are not sure if a question is appropriate to ask the mentor, check with the mentor assistant first.
  • Come to meetings on time and follow the agenda.
  • Be sensitive to the mentor and follow his or her lead during a discussion.
  • Be flexible; remember that the mentor is volunteering his or her time and expertise.
  • Generate a monthly report summarizing interaction with the mentor and post it in your mentor/mentee classroom.


Overall Expectations

  • Mentors will provide guidance to mentees about their short- and long-term professional goals.
  • Mentors will provide a broad picture of secondary education and teaching and specifically focus on where each mentee's goals may fit into the profession.
  • Mentors will provide any necessary guidance on professional etiquette.
  • Mentors will provide input on professional organizations or associations that they feel might benefit the mentee.

Operational Expectations

  • Mentors will “meet” with mentees at least three times a month.
  • Mentors are welcome to interact with their mentees more frequently; however, UMUC is asking for a commitment to three monthly meetings—we do not want to overburden the mentors with an expectation that you will interact with your mentee more frequently.
  • Mentors may choose the medium with which they meet with their mentee: Phone, e-mail, in person and online are all appropriate.
  • Mentors and mentees will establish the level of depth to the relationship.
  • Mentors should initiate the ground rules for interaction (who will attend, how long it should last, what preparation the student should make prior to the meeting).
  • Mentors should establish who will set the agenda for the next meeting at the end of the current meeting; mentor assistants will assist in setting the agenda for the first meeting.

We are asking you to give as much as you are able to this program without burdening your professional or personal life. If you have a passion for mentoring and desire to develop an in-depth relationship with your mentee, there are no restrictions; however, if meeting three times a month is the amount of time you are able to give, that, too, is appreciated. This is an opportunity to give back to someone starting out in the education profession.
