Standard 1: Mission , Goals, and Objectives
The institution's mission clearly defines its purpose within the context of higher education and explains whom the institution serves and what it intends to accomplish. The institution's stated goals and objectives, consistent with the aspirations and expectations of higher education, clearly specify how the institution will fulfill its mission. The mission, goals, and objectives are developed and recognized by the institution with its members and its governing body and are utilized to develop and shape its programs and practices and to evaluate its effectiveness.

Mission, Goals, and Objectives

  1. What is UMUC's mission? Does the mission clearly articulate the scope and critical attributes of the institution, the population to be served, guiding principles and values, and the ways in which the mission will be accomplished?

  2. What are the corresponding goals and objectives? Where are they articulated and how are they promulgated? Are the goals and objectives clearly stated, relevant, and appropriate in light of the organization's mission? What are specific examples that support the Self-Study conclusions about the connections between mission, goals, and objectives? Are there any inconsistencies among the organization's mission, goals, and objectives and, if so, what are the plans to address this matter?

  3. In what ways do the mission, goals, and objectives guide faculty, administration, staff, and governing bodies in making decisions related to planning, resource allocation, program and curriculum development, and definition of program outcomes? What are some specific examples that illustrate the Self-Study conclusions?

  4. In what ways do the mission, goals, and objectives include support of scholarly and creative activity at levels and of the kinds appropriate to UMUC's character and purpose.

  5. What is the process used in developing, monitoring, and making needed revisions to the mission, goals, and objectives? In what ways are those responsible for institutional improvements and developments involved so this is a collaborative process?

  6. What was the process used to formally approve, publicize, and ensure widespread knowledge of the mission, goals, and objectives?

  7. How do the mission, goals, and objectives relate to external as well as internal contexts and constituencies?

  8. To what extent is the mission linked to institutional goals and objectives that focus on student learning, other outcomes, and institutional improvement? What are some specific examples that illustrate the connection among goals, objectives, and student learning outcomes? What are some examples that help illustrate commitment to measurement against goals, systematic feedback, and appropriate institutional improvement?
