Faculty

  1. What are the major responsibilities of faculty? How do the roles of online faculty compare to those of traditional classroom-based faculty?

  2. What process does the university use to recruit the best possible faculty to support its curricula? How successful is this process? How does the university ensure that the new faculty is appropriately qualified? How does the university ensure that newly recruited faculty, online and traditional classroom-based, are equally and appropriately prepared for their roles?

  3. What process does the university use to ensure that the number and composition of faculty is sufficient to fulfill its institutional mission? How are faculty workloads determined? What role does the institutional mission play in this determination of workloads?

  4. How does the university ensure that educational curricula are effectively designed, reviewed and revised by faculty and other professionals? How does the university ensure that there is an appropriate, worldwide coordination of this effort?

  5. How does the university ensure that the adjunct faculty meets the same standards for appointment, workload, review, and evaluation as full-time faculty? How does the university ensure that the adjunct faculty is supported, reviewed and otherwise as equitably treated as the full-time faculty?

  6. What are the expectations and standards for teaching excellence established by the university? How is faculty performance measured and evaluated with respect to these standards for teaching excellence? How does the university ensure that the measurement of excellence for each faculty member is fair, valid and reliable? How does the university analyze student evaluations of teaching?

  7. How does the university support the enhancement of faculty teaching skills and other faculty professional development? How does the university determine that this support is adequate and fairly distributed?

  8. What is the role of collective bargaining at UMUC in implementing standards for promotion, tenure, and grievance?

  9. How does the university encourage the faculty to pursue excellence in scholarship and service, in addition to excellence in teaching? How does the university support these activities? What evidence indicates that the faculty is productive in the scholarship of teaching and in the creation of knowledge consistent with the university’s mission?

  10. Does the university have clear, readily available, and effective policies and procedures in place for appointment, promotion, grievance, discipline and dismissal?

  11. How does the university support and promote the principles of academic freedom?
