Dr.
Joseph B. Moore, President of SUNY
Empire State College, will chair UMUC’s
Middle States evaluation team.
On
July 1, 2000, Dr. Joseph Moore assumed
the position of president of the State
University of New York’s Empire
State College. He now oversees an institution
that makes college programs available
to working adults who require a flexible
alternative to campus-based programs.
Empire State College has over 35 locations
throughout New York State, five international
locations, and a rapidly expanding range
of web-based distance learning programs.
The college is a pioneer in offering
faculty-guided, individualized associate,
bachelor’s and master’s degree
programs; for developing online degree
programs and other distance learning
options; and for evaluating learning
from work and life experience for college
credit. In the 2002-03, the college enrolled
more than 17,000 students, and now has
more than 42,000 alumni.
Now
in his fifth year at Empire State College,
Dr. Moore has placed an emphasis on strengthening
the College’s commitment
to high quality education for adult learners,
and ensuring that it is delivered consistently,
whether a student is enrolled in New York
City or Buffalo, Prague or Athens. Dr.
Moore also has made priorities of further
integrating technology into education in
ways that support student learning and
employee productivity; supporting professional
development of faculty and staff; increasing
the diversity of students, employees, curriculum;
introducing new academic programs that
meet the needs of adult learners and the
communities in which they live, and promoting
the visibility of the College.
Immediately before coming to Empire State College, Dr. Moore served as the provost and vice president for academic affairs at Mansfield University of Pennsylvania. He led efforts at Mansfield University to develop collaborative partnerships with community colleges, business and industry, and the nonprofit sector; to develop new academic programs; and to increase the service region of the University.
Dr.
Moore spent many years in Vermont higher
education, including seven years in the
Chancellor’s Office of the Vermont
State Colleges, where he was director of
planning and academic affairs. Previously
he had been a department chairperson and
a faculty member.
Dr. Moore has a B.A. degree in English from the University of Massachusetts, Summa
Cum Laude; an M.A. in English from the University of New Hampshire; and an Ed.D. in Education Administration from the University of Vermont. He is a member of the Commission on Adult Learning and Educational Credentials of the American Council on Education (ACE), the Committee on International Education of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU), and vice chair of the Council of Adult and Experiential Learning (CAEL).
