Veterans Education Benefits

You can use your veterans education benefits to help pay for your education at UMUC. Your eligibility depends on a number of factors.

Chapter 30: Montgomery GI Bill—Active Duty

You receive monthly benefits payments based on your training time and can use them to help pay for tuition and books. You must complete a monthly verification of enrollment.

Undergraduate Training Time

Use the chart below to ensure that you register for enough credits based on the length of the session to maximize your monthly benefit. For instance, in an eight-week session, you must take at least 5 credits to receive your maximum benefit.

Graduate Training Time

During graduate sessions that are 13 weeks or shorter, 6 credits is full training time, and 3 credits is half training time.

Chapter 31: Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment

Your monthly benefits are paid directly to UMUC and are based on your training time. You also receive assistance with purchasing textbooks and supplies. You may be eligible to have your application fee paid. You must get approval from your case managers on their 28-1905 authorization forms.

Chapter 32: Veterans Educational Assistance Program

You receive monthly benefits payments based on your training time and can use them to help pay for tuition and books.

Chapter 33: Post‐9/11 GI Bill

Your monthly benefits are paid directly to UMUC and are based on your rate of pursuit and length of service percentage. You receive a book allowance and may also be eligible for a housing allowance based on your length of service percentage.

Chapter 1606: Montgomery G.I. Bill—Selected Reserve

You receive monthly benefits payments based on your training time and can use them to help pay for tuition and books. You must complete a monthly verification of enrollment.

Chapter 1607: Reserve Educational Assistance Program

You receive monthly benefits payments based on your training time and can use them to help pay for tuition and books. You must complete a monthly verification of enrollment.

National Call to Service Program

If you are eligible for the National Call to Service Program, you have a choice of benefits the following benefits: a cash bonus, repayment of student loans, entitlement to educational benefits equal to the three year monthly Chapter 30 rate for 12 months, or entitlement to educational benefits to 50 percent of the less than three year monthly Chapter 30 rate for 36 months.

Yellow Ribbon Program

UMUC is a Yellow Ribbon Program school, so if you're a 100% eligible Post-9/11 veteran living outside of Maryland, you can apply for Yellow Ribbon funding to reduce the out-of-pocket costs between in-state and out-of-state tuition.

Tuition Savings for Federal Workers

If you are a federal government employee and live outside of Maryland, you, your spouse, and your dependent children receive a 25 percent discount on out-of-state tuition. Plus, the application fee is waived. Read more about federal employee discounts, and start saving today.
