Telecommunications Systems Engineer Course (TSEC): 4C-24A

Master of Science in Information Technology with a specialization in Telecommunications Management (ITECTLM-MS) 36 credits


Eligibility: Students who have completed the Telecommunications Systems Engineer Course (TSEC): 4C-24A are eligible. In order for a TSEC student to be granted transfer credits, the student must meet UMUC's criteria for transfer as set forth in the applicable catalog at the time the student requests acceptance of the transferred credits.

TSEC Credit: UMUC will accept a block of 15 transfer credits for each TSEC student who completes the program.  Note, this is subject to review of any courses that a student may have previously taken at UMUC and falls within the articulation of TSEC transfer credit.  Since 15 credits exceed the normal credit transfer limits accepted, UMUC will not accept any other transfer credits toward the MS degree.  

Students who have completed the TSEC, and are following the new programs (starting the Fall 2007 semester), can receive the following credits in the listed degree and specialization:

  • ITEC 620 - Information Technology Infrastructure (3)
  • TLMN 602 - Telecommunications Industry: Structure and Environment (3)
  • TLMN 623 - Telecommunications Network (3)
  • TLMN 641 - Network Management and Design (3)
  • INFA 620 - Network and Internet Security (3)

Students who have completed the TSEC, and are current students before the start of the fall 2007 semester, can receive the following credits in the listed degrees and specializations:

CSMN, IRM TRACK Program

  • CSMN 636 Telecommunications and Connectivity (3)
  • TLMN 641 Network Management and Design (3)
  • TLMN 672 Network and Internet Security (3)
  • Two Electives

MSIT Program

  • MSIT 610 Foundations of Information Technology (3)
  • MSIT 640 Data Communications and Networks(3)
  • MSIT 660 Internet Technology (3)

AND Two courses from below OR 5 courses from the following list of MSIT electives

  • CSMN 655 Information Risk Assessment and Security Mgmt (3)

Noncredit Course
All students coming into any UMUC graduate program must take UCSP 615 Orientation to Graduate Studies at UMUC within the first six credit hours. There is a $75 fee.

Master of Business Administration (MBA) Dual Degree Program:
In accordance with UMUC applicable policies, procedures and requirements, TSEC students have the option of pursuing a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree after completing the requirements for the ITECTLM. TSEC students wishing to pursue this option should confer with a UMUC academic advisor at the earliest opportunity since the 7-year rule also includes these courses.  Students may earn the MBA by completing the following additional coursework:

  • DMBA 610 Ethical Leadership in Organizations and Society (6)
  • DMBA 620 Effective Financial and Operational Decision Making (6)
  • DMBA 630 Marketing and Strategy Management in the Global Marketplace (6)

Program Information: The ITECTLM degree consist of 36 semester hours or 12 courses.  A "full load" is 2 courses in fall and spring and 1 course in the abbreviated summer semester.

Students who are following the previous requirements (before the Fall 2007 semester) can still continue the original degree pursuits.  However, registration must be done using the current course names and numbers.

Applying

Administrative Information: 

  • Students must meet standard UMUC admission requirements.

  • Students must apply for admission. On the admissions application student should indicate they are applying for the Master of Science in Information Technology Telecommunications Management (ITECTLM-MS).  

  • Upon completion of the TSEC program, students must complete and submit a Transfer Credit Evaluation Request Form  along with an official transcript from TSEC to have the credits posted to the UMUC transcript.

  • Since 15 credits exceed the normal credit transfer limits accepted by UMUC, no other additional credits may be transferred into the program.

  • All requirements established for the completion of the program must be fulfilled within seven consecutive years and include the track seminar or correspondence courses taken with TSEC. This requirement cannot be waived.

  • UMUC will not accept the transfer of partial credit, i.e. less than 15 credits for this program.

  • Students who have completed the TSEC who are active duty military are eligible for Maryland in-state graduate tuition at the prevailing rates for the MSM. The rate for the MBA program will be the prevailing tuition as published in the fee schedule. View Tuition and Fees.
