University of Maryland University College students and alumni do more than just take classes. Many of these individuals are active volunteers within local organizations, schools, churches, neighborhoods, and at UMUC. To recognize the service of our students and alumni, UMUC presents the Volunteer of the Month award monthly.
The award honors the dedication of UMUC's students and alumni to pursue the greater good and their willingness to help others, even while juggling work, school, family and other responsibilities. Award winners are recognized on UMUC's Volunteer of the Month webpage and in social media posts.
"From my work experience and the wonderful education that I received from UMUC, I stand prepared and committed to support those who may not be able to walk this path alone." said Angela Chavis, award recipient and UMUC alumna (2009, 2011).
Chavis received the November/December 2017 Volunteer of the Month award for her volunteer work both with the UMUC Alumni Association and within her local community.
Michael Hurd, a current student and active-duty serviceman, received the September 2017 award for his service at a local state park and within his church.
"I love volunteering and accepting any opportunities that come my way," he said. "I will always accept the call to serve others and feel joy when I do so."
Students, alumni, faculty, and staff can nominate students or alumni for Volunteer of the Month. Submitting a nomination is a simple process, and nominations are accepted at any time. Self-nominations are also welcome.
