SUBJECT: Policy 170.11 – Doctoral Program Policies

I. Introduction

  1. This policy applies to the UMUC Doctoral Program only.

  2. This policy is effective as of the fall 2004 term.

II. Application Process

  1. Interested applicants must submit the following materials by the published deadlines (see www.umuc.edu/doctor) in order to be considered for admission to the Doctor of Management Program (DM):

    1. completed DM application;

    2. personal statement (see application instructions);

    3. official score report sent directly from ETS for the GMAT Analytical Writing Assessment (score can be no more than two years old at time of application);

    4. official score report sent directly from ETS for the complete GRE or GMAT (required of applicants whose master’s degree GPA falls below 3.5 on a 4.00 scale);

    5. completed, signed recommendations in sealed envelopes (see application instructions);

    6. official transcripts from a regionally accredited bachelor’s and master’s degree granting institutions (see Policy 170.10- Graduate Admissions; and

    7. application fee.
  1. The same requirements and rules apply to International Student applicants.

  2. Applicants may only be admitted to the Doctoral Program as degree seeking.

III. Admissions Criteria

Admission to the DM Program is competitive. Meeting or exceeding the eligibility standards does not guarantee admission. The following criteria represent the general eligibility standards:

  1. Evidence of a completed master’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university with a grade-point average (GPA) of at least 3.2 on a 4.00 scale;

  2. At least five years of professional experience;

  3. A score at the 75th percentile or above on the GMAT Analytical Writing Assessment.

IV. Academic Levels of Progress

  1. UMUC has developed academic advising services in accordance with the Board of Regents Policy III-2.50 Policy on Academic Advising, approved on June 21, 1990.

  2. In addition to meeting the academic levels of progress outlined in this Policy, doctoral program financial aid recipients are required to meet the satisfactory academic progress standards outlined in UMUC Policy 220.31 – Financial Aid Satisfactory Academic Progress Standard – Graduate Students.

  3. The cumulative grade-point average is calculated and reviewed at the end of every semester or term.

  4. A cumulative grade–point average of 3.0 is required to remain in good standing.

  5. A grade of F will result in academic dismissal from the DM Program.

  6. A course in which a grade of C is earned must be repeated in the next semester of enrollment and a grade of B or better must be earned.

V. Degree Completion Timeline

All courses and requirements for the doctoral degree must be completed within seven years from the first semester of enrollment in the doctoral program.
