ORIGINATOR: University Registrar and Vice Provost, Student Affairs
SUBJECT: Policy 215.00 – Student Academic Load And Enrollment Status
- Introduction
- Students are advised to limit their course loads to conform with the
demands of their employment and the time they have to prepare for courses.
- The Registrar’s Offices of UMUC-Adelphi, UMUC-Europe, UMUC-Asia, and
Schwäbisch Gmünd provide the respective official certification of students'
enrollment status. Statements of enrollment issued by other offices are
unofficial.
- The definition of normal academic load may vary across different types
of graduate programs, including the MBA, Doctor of Management, and executive
master’s degrees, according to their format.
- Graduate Programs
- A normal load for full-time students or those employed for no more
than 20 hours a week is generally 9 semester hours per semester. Fully
employed students are generally limited to a maximum of 6 semester hours
in the fall and spring semesters and 3 semester hours during the summer.
- Full-time students who are not employed or who work fewer than 20 hours
a week may petition to take additional courses by submitting a request
in writing to the Associate Provost, Graduate Student Affairs (except
for those students in the MBA program and/or I-20 students), at least
one month before the beginning of the semester.
- Students who have previously been in academic jeopardy are cautioned
against taking a larger course load. Graduate students are required to
maintain a GPA of at least 3.0 and those who have previously been in academic
jeopardy have already used the one option to repeat.
- Undergraduate Programs
- Full-time status in a 15-week semester requires enrollment in at least
12 semester hours.
- Full-time status in an 8-week term requires enrollment in at least
6 semester hours.
- Half-time status in a 15-week semester requires enrollment in at least
6 semester hours.
- Half-time status in an 8-week term requires enrollment in at least
3 semester hours.
- In no case may a student register for more than 18 semester hours in
a 15-week semester or 9 semester hours in a 8-week term without written
permission from the appropriate student affairs unit. Written requests
must be submitted at least one month before the beginning of the semester
or term.
