James Sherwood


A graduate of Harvard University’s Institute for the Management of Lifelong Education, he was director of the Department of Distance Education and later became associate dean of Continuing Studies at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. From there, he moved on to the University of California, Berkley, where he served first as dean of University Extension and then as special academic advisor to the executive vice chancellor and provost.  He left that post to join the UMUC leadership team in January 2008.

In keeping with his professional commitment to lifelong learning, Dr. Sherwood has served as chair of the Council on Extension, Continuing Education, and Public Service of the National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges, and as a member of the Board of Directors and the Executive Board of the University Continuing Education Association. He also received both the John L. Christopher Leadership Award and the Nofflet Williams Telecommunications Leadership Award.
