Mark W. Carter
Mark W. Carter is vice president for Strategy and Business Development for University of Maryland University College (UMUC). He has been with the university since December 2006.
Mr. Carter manages the strategic planning for UMUC which draws upon the expertise and input of the university’s Executive Committee. The annual process results in both an updated longer term plan as well as a strategic plan for the upcoming fiscal year. Mr. Carter’s business development responsibilities are focused on identifying, developing, and implementing projects and initiatives by which to generate incremental revenues and thereby further strengthen UMUC.
Mr. Carter has over twenty-five years of business experience in strategic planning, business development, general management, product management, marketing, and sales and sales management. The majority of his experience has been in the for-profit sector in the healthcare, financial services, and travel industries.
Upon obtaining his postgraduate degree in business, Mr. Carter worked in the consumer packaged goods industry for General Mills. He held several positions of increasing responsibility there in product management. Mr. Carter was then employed by Marriott Corporation, initially in marketing during the national rollout of Courtyard by Marriott Hotels and then as head of marketing, planning, and new business development with HMS Host, Marriott’s airport and toll road foodservice and merchandise division. Mr. Carter next gained general management experience as a regional general manager for ADVO, the largest direct mail marketing company in the United States. He later returned to a marketing role as the chief marketing officer for American Express Financial Advisors (renamed Ameriprise). Immediately before joining UMUC, Mr.Carter made a shift to the non-profit world as head of all existing products for AARP Services, the revenue generating arm of AARP.
Mr. Carter has a degree in history and in American studies from Williams College and an MBA from Harvard Business School.
