The Leadership Development Program is for experienced mid- to senior-level managers who work in the middle zone of their organizations. This program is a good fit for operational, group, or department managers who are responsible for supervising management-level direct reports and working across functions.

Learn how to strengthen and refine your fundamental leadership skills—communication, self-awareness, influence, and learning agility—as your roles become more complex and demanding.
You will also focus on two essential competencies for managing the in the middle zone:

Comprehensive assessments—along with an organizational business simulation, coaching, and peer learning groups—ensure that you'll have a powerful and personal experience that drives results.
Program Costs and Training Location
This five-day program costs $7,200 and is offered at the UMUC Inn and Conference Center, just outside of Washington, D.C., in Adelphi, Maryland. Hotel accommodations are available at the conference center for an additional $1,000.

Leadership Development Program Sample Agenda
Phase One: Getting Started
The Leadership Development Program is driven by detailed, personal data. Participants fill out several assessment surveys prior to attending the five-day on-site session. In addition, certain surveys require that participants’ direct reports and superiors complete evaluations. The surveys are sent out at least four weeks prior to the program date with a deadline for completion.
Phase Two: On-Site Training (Five Days)
Day One: Leading from the Middle
Participants explore the realities of managers leading managers. Using the Leading Managers 360 assessment, participants reflect on and discuss the critical leadership skills required to lead from the middle of organizations and receive detailed data on how others see them in their leadership roles.
Day Two: Leading Through Collaboration
Focus is on how managers of managers work with and through their peers to coordinate and align the organization's strategies. Participants reflect on how to more effectively communicate and influence peers when collaborating.
Day Three: Leading Within a System
Focus is on the middle manager's responsibility for leading up, across, down, and outside the organization. Participants engage in a highly interactive experience that simulates the complexities and challenges of that environment. They work in small groups with an NLI coach to assess their leadership effectiveness in this activity.
Day Four: Integrating
Participants work one-on-one for three hours with an executive coach certified by the Center for Creative Leadership. During the coaching period, participants review and integrate assessment data and other sources of feedback received throughout the program and set goals and identify strategies to implement them. Participants also take part in a process of giving and receiving feedback with classmates.
Day Five: Transferring
Participants refine goals and plans to apply what they have learned to their organization.
Phase Three: Application
The National Leadership Institute supports continued development after the on-site training with two 45-minute telephone coaching sessions. Participants also receive a structured process for conversations with their bosses—a critical step for success. Three months after the program, participants complete an assessment to measure their progress on skills and behaviors.
