| Q: | How do I participate in the College of Southern Maryland–University of Maryland University College (CSMUMUC) Alliance? |
|
| A: | Complete the CSMUMUC Alliance application form, even if you are currently admitted to CSM. Complete the Alliance application before you earn your associate's degree. There is no application fee. UMUC academic requirements for admission are:
If you present at least 24 semester hours of transferable college credits, you are not required to submit official high school transcripts or GED scores. |
|
| Q: | If I am admitted to CSM, am I automatically admitted to UMUC? | |
| A: | Once you have met the admissions criteria and have completed the Alliance application form, you may be admitted to both CSM and UMUC. | |
| Q: | Will my admission information be available at CSM and UMUC? | |
| A: | Yes. Your information will be entered into the databases at both CSM and UMUC. | |
| Q: | If I am admitted to UMUC through the Alliance, am I also admitted to other University System of Maryland (USM) institutions? | |
| A: | No. The dual admission applies to CSM and UMUC only. Other USM institutions require separate applications for admission. | |
REGISTRATION |
||
| Q: | Where do I register for classes? | |
| A: | You will register through the usual registration process of the institution offering the course you wish to take. | |
| Q: | Do I pay CSM tuition or UMUC tuition? | |
| A: | You will pay the tuition and fees charged by the institution offering the course(s) you are taking. | |
| Q: | If I am eligible for tuition remission as an employee of the state of Maryland or as an employee of CSM or UMUC, may I use this benefit at either institution? | |
| A: | No. You may use your tuition remission only at the institution at which you are employed. | |
| Q: | If I am a senior citizen, do I get my tuition waived at either institution in the Alliance? | |
| A: | Yes. Your tuition may be waived if you meet the established criteria at either institution. | |
DEGREE PROGRAMS |
||
| Q: | Which degree programs are linked in this Alliance? | |
| A: | See Linked Associate's to Bachelor's Degree Programs. | |
| Q: | How many credits may I transfer to UMUC? | |
| A: | UMUC accepts up to 90 credits in transfer from all collegiate schools attended including applicable military credit. Students transferring from a Maryland community college may transfer up to 70 credit hours of applicable credit towards a bachelor's degree. Students are encouraged to complete an associate's degree at their community college and speak with a UMUC representative at their community college campus. | |
| Q: | Do I need to ask CSM to send academic transcripts to UMUC? | |
| A: | Yes. If you are admitted to the Alliance, you are encouraged to have your electronic transcripts sent from CSM to UMUC for the purpose of advising or transfer evaluation. You may choose to have transcripts sent either at the end of every semester or after you complete all of your CSM coursework. CSM does not charge a transcript fee. | |
| Q: | Must I complete my associates degree before enrolling at UMUC? | |
| A: | No. However, it may be to your advantage to complete your associates degree at CSM first. CSM graduates have found the associates degree useful in obtaining jobs or promotions while continuing to pursue a bachelor's degree. If you have your associate’s degree, you may be eligible for the Maryland Community College Scholarship. | |
| Q: | Who do I see for academic advising? | |
| A: | CSM counselors will advise on degree requirements for your associate’s degree. Talk with a UMUC advisor about which courses will transfer from CSM and which courses are required for the bachelor’s degree at UMUC. A UMUC representative is available at the Leonardtown and Prince Frederick campuses on Mondays and La Plata campus on Tuesdays. You may also meet with a UMUC representative at the Waldorf Center for Higher Education or Patuxent River Naval Air Station. | |
| Q: | If I am currently enrolled at UMUC, may I return to CSM to take additional courses under the Alliance? | |
| A: | Returning to CSM will depend on the number of credits originally transferred to UMUC from a community college. Check with a UMUC advisor before making any decisions to return to CSM for additional credit. | |
| Q: | Which school will be awarding my degree? | |
| A: | CSM awards associates degrees, and UMUC awards bachelors degrees. | |
FINANCIAL AID |
||
| Q: | If I apply for financial aid, which school issues it? | |
| A: | While you attend CSM only, CSM issues your financial aid. As soon as you plan to register for your first class at UMUC, you must reapply for financial aid through UMUC and have your financial aid transcripts sent from CSM to UMUC. You should also inform your financial aid office at CSM of your plans to begin courses at UMUC. To complete the financial aid process with UMUC, please click on http://www.umuc.edu/students/fincaid.shtml | |
| Q: | Will my financial aid from UMUC pay for courses at CSM? | |
| A: | You will need to pay your CSM tuition costs at CSM. However, the amount of financial aid disbursed to you through UMUC will be based on your enrollment at both schools, if you have completed a financial aid consortium agreement between UMUC and CSM. Contact a UMUC advisor to initiate the consortium agreement. | |
| Q: | If I am an Alliance student and want to take courses at UMUC and CSM in the same semester, what steps do I need to take to obtain a consortium agreement? | |
| A: | Contact a UMUC advisor and ask for a letter of permission to take courses at CSM. Your advisor will also initiate a financial aid consortium agreement between UMUC and CSM. You must supply verification of enrollment at CSM, the completed letter of permission, and the signed consortium agreement to UMUCs Financial Aid Office. | |
VETERANS BENEFITS |
||
| Q: | If I am eligible for benefits from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, may I use them at either institution in the Alliance? | |
| A: | Yes. You may use your veterans benefits at either CSM or UMUC. | |
| Q: | Which institution will handle my paperwork? | |
| A: | While you are enrolled at CSM only, CSM processes your veterans benefits. As soon as you are planning to register for your first class at UMUC, you must complete a Request for Change of Program or Place of Training Form and a UMUC Veterans Certification Form for veterans benefits through UMUC. | |
