| Q: | How do I participate in the MCUMUC Alliance? | |
| A: | You must complete the MCUMUC Alliance application form, even if you are currently admitted to MC.
If you are a new student to MC and you have not already completed an MC admission application, you must submit a $25 fee along with the Alliance application to Montgomery College. If you are already a MC student, you do not have to pay the $25 fee. There is no admission fee payable to UMUC. Complete the Alliance application before you earn your associate's degree. UMUC academic requirements for admissions are
If you present at least 24 semester hours of transferable college credit at the time of admission you are not required to submit official high school transcripts or GED scores. |
|
| Q: | If I am admitted to MC, am I automatically admitted to UMUC? | |
| A: | Once you have met the admissions criteria and have completed the Alliance application form, you will be admitted to both MC and UMUC. In addition, you must meet the admission criteria at UMUC at the time of your first course registration at UMUC. | |
| Q: | Will my admission information be available at both institutions? | |
| A: | Yes. Your information will be entered into the databases at both MC and UMUC. | |
| Q: | If I am admitted to UMUC through the Alliance, am I also admitted to other University System of Maryland (USM) institutions? | |
| A: | No. The dual admission applies to MC and UMUC only. Other USM institutions require a separate application for admission. | |
REGISTRATION |
||
| Q: | Where do I register for classes? | |
| A: | You will register through the usual registration process of the institution offering the course. | |
| Q: | Do I pay MC tuition or UMUC tuition? | |
| A: | You will pay the tuition and fees charged by the institution offering the course. | |
| Q: | If I am eligible for tuition remission as an employee of the state of Maryland or as an employee of MC or UMUC, may I use this benefit at either institution? | |
| A: | You may use your tuition remission only at the institution at which you are employed. | |
| Q: | If I am a senior citizen, do I get my tuition waived at either institution in the Alliance? | |
| A: | Your tuition may be waived if you meet the established criteria at either institution. | |
DEGREE PROGRAMS |
||
| Q: | Which degree programs are linked in this Alliance? | |
| A: | See Linked Associate's to Bachelor's Degree Programs | |
| Q: | How many credits may I transfer to UMUC? | |
| A: | UMUC accepts up to 90 credits in transfer from all collegiate schools attended including applicable military credit. Students transferring from a Maryland community college may transfer up to 70 credit hours of applicable credit towards a bachelor's degree. Students are encouraged to complete an associate's degree at their community college and speak with a UMUC representative at their community college campus. | |
| Q: | Must I complete my associates degree before enrolling at UMUC? | |
| A: | No. However, it may be to your advantage to remain at MC to complete your associates degree. MC graduates have found the associates degree useful in obtaining jobs or promotions while continuing to pursue a bachelors degree. If you have your associate’s degree, you may be eligible for the Maryland Community College Scholarship. | |
| Q: | How can I earn credit for prior learning? | |
| A: | Opportunities for earning college-level credits for learning gained through life and work experience are available to all Alliance students. For more information contact UMUCs Prior Learning Office, at 800-888-UMUC (8682), ext. 2860. | |
| Q: | Whom do I see for academic advising? | |
| A: | Currently, MC counselors will advise on degree requirements for your associates degree. Talk with a UMUC advisor about which courses will transfer from MC and which courses are required for the bachelors degree at UMUC. A UMUC representative comes to each MC campus. Check with the MC advising offices for the next UMUC visit. | |
| Q: | Do I need to ask MC to send academic transcripts to UMUC? | |
| A: | Yes. If you are admitted to the Alliance, you are encouraged to arrange to have your electronic transcripts sent from MC to UMUC for the purpose of advising or transfer evaluation. You may choose to have transcripts sent either at the end of every semester or after you complete all of your MC coursework. | |
| Q: | Is there a fee to send my transcript? | |
| A: | No. Alliance students who request official transcripts to be sent through electronic transfer exchange are not charged a fee. | |
| Q: | If I am currently enrolled at UMUC, may I return to MC to take additional courses under the Alliance? | |
| A: | Returning to MC will depend on the number of credits originally transferred to UMUC from a community college. You may take courses at MC after transferring to UMUC, but only 60 credit hours from MC will be applicable to a bachelors degree. Check with a UMUC advisor before making any decisions to return to MC for additional credit. MC permits students to transfer up to nine credits back to MC to complete an associates degree. | |
| Q: | Which school will be awarding my degree? | |
| A: | MC awards associates degrees and UMUC awards bachelors degrees. If you do not complete the associates degree from MC before you transfer to UMUC, you may transfer back to MC up to nine credit hours from UMUC towards the associates degree. Check with an MC counselor or the Registrars Office about the details. | |
FINANCIAL AID |
||
| Q: | If I apply for financial aid, which school issues it? | |
| A: | While you attend MC only, MC issues your financial aid. As soon as you plan to register for your first class at UMUC, you must reapply for financial aid through UMUC and have your financial aid transcripts sent from MC to UMUC. You should also inform your financial aid office at MC of your plans to begin courses at UMUC. To complete the financial aid process with UMUC, please click on http://www.umuc.edu/students/fincaid.shtml | |
| Q: | Will my financial aid from UMUC pay for courses at MC? | |
| A: | You will need to pay your MC tuition costs at MC. However, the amount of financial aid disbursed to you through UMUC will be based on your enrollment at both schools, if you have completed a financial aid consortium agreement between UMUC and MC. Contact a UMUC advisor to initiate the consortium agreement. | |
| Q: | If I am an Alliance student and want to take courses at UMUC and MC in the same semester, what steps do I need to take to obtain a consortium agreement? | |
| A: | Contact a UMUC advisor and ask for a letter of permission to take courses at MC. Your advisor will also initiate a financial aid consortium agreement between UMUC and MC. You must supply verification of enrollment at MC, the completed letter of permission, and the signed consortium agreement to UMUCs Financial Aid Office. | |
VETERANS BENEFITS |

| Q: | If I am eligible for benefits from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, may I use them at either institution in the Alliance? | |
| A: | Yes. You may use your veterans benefits at either MC or UMUC. | |
| Q: | Which institution will handle my paperwork? | |
