How soon after submitting my application will I get a response? We try to approve new applications to the Academic Support Program (ASP) as quickly as possible. In most cases, you can expect to hear from us within two weeks of your application submission. How soon after submitting my application will I be staffed for a class?Once your application has been conditionally approved, you will need to submit an official transcript of your bachelor's (or higher) degree. In addition, you will have to make arrangements to come to headquarters to complete some additional paperwork (the documents can be mailed to you if you do not live locally). Once that paperwork is complete, you will be eligible to be staffed in a class. Note that it may be some time before you are assigned to a class. I'm a new Teaching Assistant; how can I find a class to assist? We maintain a database of your names. Once you have been approved as a teaching assistant (TA) or student assistant (SA), your name will be added to the database. If a faculty member calls us looking for help finding a TA, we first check the database, in which you are listed by your subject area and the locations you are willing to work. All approved TAs also have access to WebTycho ASPX999, our program management site. Openings are posted there; therefore, it is to your benefit to check that conference regularly. Another option is to talk with your past professors (if you were a student here) and ask whether they know of any openings. Staffing for Spanish (SPAN), German (GERM), and history (HIST) classes is done slightly differently. If you are working in one of these areas, please contact the academic director for more information. How much do I get paid? There are two levels of TAs. Each course is designated for TA support at either Level 1 or Level 2. If you have a question about which level a course is designated as, ask your professor or contact the ASP Coordinator. For Summer 2005, the base pay is $800 (per 3-credit course) for Level 1 TAs and $920 (per 3-credit course) for Level 2 TAs; some courses are eligible for higher pay because of their specialized requirements. When do I get paid? For 3-credit full-semester or mid-semester courses, TAs will be paid half at midterms and half at the conclusion of the course (the exact date is given in the written appointment letter that is sent to you at the beginning of the semester). For 3-credit Term I or Term II classes, TAs are paid at the conclusion of the course. For 1-credit courses, TAs will be paid soon after they finish the course. How many classes can I assist? You are limited to working no more than 18 hours a semester as a TA or SA. This would be the equivalent of three 3-credit courses at Level 2 or four 3-credit classes at Level 1 as a TA. Level 2 courses require that you work no more than six hours a week; Level 1 classes require no more than four hours a week; SAs work three hour shifts.. If you find yourself working more than the specified number of hours, please contact your faculty member to discuss your workload. Are TAs and SAs eligible for benefits?TAs and SAs are eligible for direct deposit and supplemental retirement accounts. For more information, contact the ASP Coordinator. UMUC does not provide ASP employees with hardware (e.g., laptop computers) or software. In addition, ASP employees are not eligible for parking passes. TAs are entitled to a copy of the book for the courses for which they work. A copy of the book will be sent automatically. Where do I park?If your class meets at Adelphi after 4 p.m. weekdays or on weekends, you may park for free in Lot 1. If your class meets before 4 p.m., the Faculty and Distance Education Services office will provide your faculty member with UMUC parking garage passes for you and the students. For classes at the College Park campus, contact the Faculty and Distance Education Services office (https://nova.umuc.edu/prog/ugp/fdes/parking.html) to request a parking pass. Parking at the regional centers is free, although regulations may exist about where you can park. Is Direct Deposit available?Yes, and all ASP employees are encouraged to use it. Please fill out the form on the Maryland Central Payroll Bureau Web site. To fill out the form, use the following information:
Make sure you use black ink! The form will not be processed if you don't use black ink. Whom do I contact if I don't receive a 1099 form at the end of the year?Every ASP employee will receive a 1099 form for tax purposes at the end of the year. If you do not receive this form, please contact the Maryland Central Payroll Bureau. I still have questions; whom can I contact?Send your question via e-mail to the ASP Coordinator. |
