Teaching Assistants

  • Limited to work a maximum of 18 hours per week as an ASP employee (i.e., limited to three Level 2 classes or four Level 1 classes per semester).
  • Cannot change assigned work hours.
  • Expected to be prepared to assist students in the assigned area of expertise.
  • Must be sensitive to the needs of UMUC students and always willing to assist them when on duty.
  • Must be punctual, dependable, courteous, and professional.
  • Must wear attire professionally appropriate for face-to-face classes.
  • TAs perform specific duties that may include:
    • Assisting in facilitating group discussions, conferences, and study groups.
    • Assisting students in a computer, science, art, or language laboratory.
    • Scoring homework assignments and quizzes.
  • TAs may not perform the following tasks:
    • Completing students' assignments/projects.
    • Generating or modifying course syllabus.
    • Constructing examinations, projects, or assignments.
    • Scoring or grading midterm and final examinations or final course projects (except in SPAN and GERM classes).
    • Conducting the class without supervision.
  • Courses with enrollments of less than 15 students may not be eligible for TA support. Academic departments make this decision. Faculty with enrollments of less than 15 students in their class should consult their Academic Director.

Level 1 Teaching Assistants

  • Level 1 teaching assistants support courses taught part-time in a computer, science, art, or language lab or have extensive programming content and require additional support.
  • Specific responsibilities:
    • Work 4 hours per week.
    • Be present at face-to-face class sessions to assist the faculty member in the assigned computer, science, art, or language lab. The exact class sessions worked will be determined by the faculty member and is limited to no more than 50% of the total number of class sessions. For online sections, be available 4 hours per week to assist faculty member and student

Level 2 Teaching Assistants

  • Level 2 support is for courses that are normally taught full-time in a computer, science, art, or language lab.
  • Specific responsibilities:
    • Work 6 hours per week.
    • Be present at all face-to-face class sessions to assist the faculty member in the assigned computer, science, art, or language lab, approximately 3 hours per week.
    • Provide assistance for 3 hours outside of class to the faculty member and the students. (Online courses require a total of 6 hours per week in support of the faculty member and students.)

Student Assistants

  • Software Language Assistants (SLAs) are considered to be Student Assistants; SLAs provide tutoring services for programming languages; other Student Assistants provide support for the Biology and Computer Information Technology departments.
  • Limited to work a maximum of 18 hours per week as an ASP employee (i.e., as a Teaching Assistant or Student Assistant).
  • Work 3 hours per week per contract (can fulfill multiple contracts as long as total number of hours does not exceed 18 per week).
  • Be available at designated times.
  • Provide support onsite at Adelphi and/or online.
  • Be subject-matter experts in their assigned areas.
  • Provide assistance to students but not complete their homework or assignments.
  • Maintain the assigned tutorial space in a professional manner.
  • Maintain appointment system and ensure students are following mandated guidelines when making appointments.
  • Avoid disruptions during tutoring sessions.
  • Be attired in a professional manner during assigned work hours.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the ASP coordinator.
  • SAs are considered Level 2 support teaching assistants performing a slightly different role. Content for SA topic areas is determined by the Academic Directors.
