Expectations and Fees
Students are expected to take all exams when scheduled. In the event of illness or extraordinary circumstances, the student must contact the faculty member and provide documentation to request an exception and approval to take a makeup exam. If the request is not approved, the exam grade will be recorded as a zero. Failure to register for a proctored exam is not an approved reason to request a makeup exam.
If your faculty member has agreed to give you an Incomplete, you must schedule your makeup exam in time to complete it before the deadline set by the faculty member. In addition, if you have not taken the exam within four months from the end of the semester, you will not be allowed to register for the exam without special permission from both the faculty member and the dean of the School of Undergraduate Studies.
There is a $60 nonrefundable administrative fee for each makeup exam. You may also be charged a fee by an individual proctor for their services. Please be sure to determine if there is a fee, what it is, and when it must be paid. These practices vary among colleges, universities, and private testing centers. Payment for proctoring services is the responsibility of the student, not UMUC.
**A $60 fee will now be charged to your student account for all makeup exams. This shall take effect for the Spring 2007 semester.
Procedures
- Request a makeup exam by using the online form available in MyUMUC. Click on the "Makeup Exam Registration" option to complete your makeup exam request. You will need to select "Create a Makeup Exam Request".
- Makeup exam requests are pending until approved or rejected by your faculty member. You will receive an e-mail stating the status of your request.
- The form will guide you through the steps to complete your request. It will prompt you to select the course, choose the exam site, and provide justification of why the makeup exam is necessary.
- The Adelphi test center is the only UMUC site in Maryland that administers makeup exams. You may request to take a proctored makeup exam at a UMUC approved alternate site. Regional sites throughout Maryland may only be used for final exams during specified exam weeks and cannot be used to take makeup exams.
- The $60 administrative fee is only charged to your account when the faculty member and Exams and Testing Services approve the request. The fee is payable at MyUMUC. Once logged in, go to Student Portal > MyFinances > Finances > Make a Payment.
- If you schedule an appointment and fail to show up or cancel, the $60 fee is nonrefundable and you will have to submit a new request.
- Students using the UMUC testing center in Adelphi will be able to select the session date and time for the makeup exam from the testing center schedule posted online. Students are allowed up to three (3) hours for final exams, but all exams must be completed and exam materials turned in at the end of the exam session.
- Any student using an alternate site and proctor will have to provide the proctor's contact information including name, professional title, e-mail address, daytime phone number, and complete business address. Alternate site proctors are instructed to return exams within 30 days of receipt if the exam is not administered.
- Contact the UMUC Testing Center at testingcenter@umuc.edu or 240-582-6434 for general information or further instructions on using the online form.
