To help decide whether one of the two Prior Learning
assessment options are right for you, you should
Meet with your advisor in the Academic
Advising office to determine if your experiential
learning will help achieve your degree goal.
Have room in your degree plan for Prior
Learning credits. It is possible to apply
up to 30 credits through prior learning to the first
bachelor's degree and 15 credits to the second. You
must have a minimum of 15 graded UMUC credits of the
120 credits required to be able to graduate. If you
have a large number of transfer, ACE, CLEP/DANTES,
Excelsior, military, and other transferable learning,
you should talk with your advisor.
Have good time-management and study skills. Both
course challenge and portfolio assessment require the
ability to study and work on your own on a tight schedule.
To participate in EXCEL, students should:
Meet
all eligibility requirements.
Be able to write at the college level, as
shown in your application essay.
Have college-level knowledge and skills
from a minimum of five years' worth of combined learning
from
- Full- or part-time jobs
- Independent reading and study
- Training programs or in-service courses
- Volunteer and community activities
- Hobbies
and recreational pursuits
